Will your house have a smell of dogs over time if you own a dog even if you clean properly? Does having a smaller dog vs a big dog matter in regards to this issuse?

While most dogs do have a "dog smell", it certainly doesn't have to linger in your house.

The homes that I have been in with a really noticeable "dog smell" are homes where people have multiple dogs (three or more) that lay or sleep all over everything. If those people are not diligent about vacuuming their carpets and furniture, they'll get that "dog" smell over time because dogs leave their hair and dander everywhere. Dog's hair is very oily and can leave a residue which would certainly stink.

Grooming your dog regularly will reduce shedding and dander; making sure your dog is dry after getting wet will help also, 'cause I don't know if there is much that smells worse than a wet dog! :-)

Vacuum / dust / mop your home regularly, wash dog beds or blankets monthly, and keep your dog clean, and you shouldn't have any problems with dog smell. Go on, get a dog...you know you want one!

Just because you have a dog does not mean your house has to smell like dogs. The breed of dog does matter how much the dog will smell. Some dogs need to be groomed and bathed more often or else they will smell. Small dogs usually don't smell as much just because most small breeds don't like to be outside. My small dogs go outside and do their business and then come right back inside. They never smell and very rarely need a bath. My pit goes outside and like to hangout outside as long as it nice. She ends up smelling and needing a bath once a week. Read a breed book and find a dog that fits what your looking for. Hope this helps

No - I have a dog and my house smells great because I clean it. And my dog is bathed regularly and she is an indoor dog. People are always amazed that I have a dog AND FOUR CATS!

If your house smells it's a cleaning issue not a dog issue. Just as your house would smell if you never vacuumed or did the laundry. If you allowed all the sweaty, smelly socks to pile up it would start to stink up the house!

My dog sleeps with me - and because I am picky about smells (and clean sheets) I make sure she's well groomed.

Keeping your dog groomed and your house clean will generally prevent a lingering smell, but some breeds are more likely to lead to bad smells than others. Breeds with oily skin such as the Chesapeke Bay Retriever or American Water Spaniel, as well as some of the hounds, tend to have more of an odor to them. You may also want to avoid the more flatulant breeds (bulldogs, pugs, and others) because they can stink up the house as well, although it's not a permanent stench. Obviously a bigger dog will generally bring in more dirt and hair, with some exceptions such as the poodle, bouvier, and schnauzers, but basic cleaning should keep your house in good condition!

What matters more is, did you get the dog fixed. If a dog isn't fixed it will mark it's territory, and those little marks add up to an odd smell. It's not like cleaning up an oops... it's like playing "Find that smell"... so make sure that when you get your new friend, you get it fixed.

I have two large dogs that are in the house all the time. When people come over they are surprised that I do have dogs. I don't do anything out of the ordinary just vac mop and dust normal everyday cleaning.

I have 4 dogs and my house does not smell. Any accidents they have may smell but those can be removed.

I go through spells I can smell it. Puppies stink they always have accidents. Once I get the puppies adopted and thoroughly clean it will be fine.

Ive actually had people amazed it doesn't stink. It all depends on how you handle it. If you don't clean the accident completely it may get smelly.
