I'm gonna go with being punched in the face, but it really depends on who is doing the punching/slapping.

A slap from a 100 pound girl may hurt more than her punch, but being punched in the face by someone like Mike Tyson would hurt more than I can even begin to imagine...

Generally speaking, a punch would hurt than a slap if you are using an equal level of skill. But true self-defense fighters don't punch. In a real fight, I would prefer slapping and chopping as a precaution to avoid breaking my hands. See, some fighters have extremely hard heads and know how to block a punch or a strike with them. If you break your hand in a fight, you are extremely handicapped. Well trained martial artist with strength plus technique, can knock you out or break bones with slaps.
Don't think about slaps as being those done by women. Slaps to the throat are fatal. Back hand slaps and chops from a very skilled fighter can do as much damage as a punch.
Especially in the winter, never punch your opponent. In the winter, your opponent will be wearing heavy garments to keep warm, most likely. You don't know what could be in their pockets. So you use locks, throws, slaps to the face to avoid punching something that is concealed under heavy thick layers of clothing.

A punch is thought of as the more powerful strike, whereas the slap as a girlish defense. However, the slap can be done quicker, leave swelling (if done multiple times), and can easily knock someone out if done just below the jawline. Not to mention you don't bust or break knuckles hitting someone in a very boney portion of the body. The problem is most people perform the slap as locked arm, static strike which does very little. If you allow the arm to swing freely and strike like you're gonna take their head off it can be truly painful. A knock-out occurs when the brain hits the side of the skull. A Punch just isn't as effective at this result as the good old slap. True if you were Mike Tyson or a similar big muscled boxer it really doesn't matter what you throw your gonna crush or break something. Me on the other hand, (5' 9" 170lb martial arts guy) I'll do what is effective. Not to mention the mental effect of having someone slap the crap out of you. Most opponents get mad and spout out crap like "you fight like a girl". You can just look at there swollen, red face and smile as you tell them "you can say whatever you want, but at least I'm not the one who looks like there wearing rouse."

The general consensus and physiology is very consistent. A slap is immediately more painful, while a punch is more damaging and more painful in the long run.

Being a slap is open-fisted and across a large area, the energy is more easily dissipated into the soft tissues of the cheeks preventing damage to muscles and bones. While a punch is with a much denser closed-fist across a much smaller area, the soft tissues are unable to absorb sufficient energy from the impact and hence more energy is imparted to muscle and bone, which can cause damage, as well as possible damage to nerves, both causing long term pain, albeit less severe than the immediate pain of a slap.

A good punch to the ribs can break the ribs. A punch to the nose can break your nose. Like the guy earlier mentioned Tyson punches were devastating he actually damaged Golota's skull and that was punching with gloves.

If you know how to throw a good punch it is worse than a slap. Only scenario where a slap could be worse is if a finger hit the eye. That could create some damage.

Punching hurts worse. Slaps just sting but the punch can hurt for days afterward.

neither hurts as much as a kick in the nuts or a poke in the eyes!

People differ in how they feel pain - i have seen huge men go down hard when they have taken a light nut shot and others taken one hard enough to destroy them carry on fighting

a slap stings and is a wake up call - a punch can break bone, teeth or even knock you out

They're a different type of pain.

Slap is a sharp sting.
Being punched just hurts.

I agree with the above... depends on who it is and why it happened. Emotion vs. physical. That punch from Mike Tyson would really hurt. A slap that hits your eye can do unfun damage.
Fun answers all.

It depends on whether you are talking about short-term or long-term.

A hard slap (IMO) can hurt more if you are talking about an IMMEDIATE response.

A punch can break a bone, knock out teeth, cause a bruise or a bone bruise and can hurt for WEEKS.
