I've stayed at hotel called Hotel Miramar which is located on Ponce DeLeon Ave. which is not too far away from Old San Juan. It proved to be real comfortable and convenient, as well as close to shopping areas. You can check it out at www.miramarhotelpr.com.

"Staying on a budget" and "Old San Juan area" shouldn't be put in the same sentence together. There is no such thing. If you are really going on a budget (meaning less than $300 a night) then you want to stay in some place such as Carolina, or San Juan. To go to Old San Juan on a budget is to commit financial suicide. When my hubby and I first moved to Puerto Rico last year, we spent $350 per night to stay in Old San Juan at some rinky dink (didn't even have hot water) hotel. In order to really go on a budget, you have to get out of that area, save the money and rent a vehicle that can take you over there. Hope this helps, and enjoy your trip!

If you must stay in Old San Juan I don't really know first-hand of
any location that will cost under $100. When I visit the island
(every 2 years) I prefer the Miramar area (15 min.by public transportation from Old San Juan). My wife and I stay at the Hotel Excelsior in Miramar (away from the Escambron Tourist area but
again less than 15 minutes away). Unless we wnat to go into the
western part of the island (the best in my opinion) you may not need to rent a car, The public buses (.50cents) take you from the
front of this hotel to downtown San Juan. The buses have their own traffic lane and at night time is a pleasure to ride and pass the traffic jams trying to go to Old San Juan. Good Luck

My family was recently in PR for my wedding. Our wedding planner recommended At Wind Chime Inn, which is located in the Condado area, close to OSJ. The hotel was beautiful and the service was great!
