I used to have a serious fear of flying. The way I completely got over it (now I can sleep during take-off) is that one day I noticed how many planes land per second at LAX. It's 2 at a time every 20 seconds... When you see this you realize that this is only one of hundreds and hundreds of airports all over the world. It really helps you see that planes just never crash (obviously they do but it is SUCH a big deal when they do because it is so rare). Another thing that helped me was to realize that planes aren't magic (not that I was an idiot) meaning, do some reading on the physics of planes and how they ride on air cushions..to a plane the air acts much like water does when you are swimming. You don't freak out that you are going to drown when you are in a pool do you? Another thing that helped me through during tough flights is I went to the dr. and got a prescription of xanax (they were fine prescribing it for flight anxiety) and I would take one about an hour to a half hour before the flight. I honestly don't need anything anymore... I hope that helps.
If you have a lap top, take it and watch a few movies on the plane also buy or take a book you have really wanted to read..it's a great time to catch up on reading. Good luck and no worries!!!
some stats for you :) check out the web page also!!!

Probability of being killed in an airplane accident vs. other causes of death:

Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger. Experience shows otherwise considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year.

You can get hypnosis to desensitize you to it.

However, a 12 hour flight! They are really awful these days. Especially in coach. I fly to Taiwan from Washington DC occasionally. The only way I can tolerate it is with Ambien. It knocks me out within 20 minutes and the next thing I hear is the flight attendant gently waking me.

Other people take Night-time Tylenol with a shot of booze. Never worked for me and I landed with a hangover to boot.
