The above tips are good to conquer your fear. But I suspect that you will need something to occupy yourself with too, so that the flight doesn't feel too long and boring. Take a fave book, and some puzzles. Make the meals last as long as possible. Watch a movie (on long haul flights there are usually loads to choose from). Split your time into sections, and congratulate yourself when you have got through each one. And lastly, get up from your seat regularly and walk about a bit. If you can, then sleep. I never can, sadly.

Find something to do to distract you from the fact that you're on a plane. Sleeping works. If you're a reader, bring along a few good books. If it's clear outside, look out the window and pretend you're floating over a huge map or a jigsaw puzzle. If the plane offers an in-flight movie, it would be worth it to spend a few bucks to get the headphones and take in the flick!

Finally, as other answerers pointed out, statistically flying is safer than driving. An aircraft engine is a lot simpler than an automotive engine, so it runs more smoothly with fewer problems.

Here's how I would approach this:
1st, Find out why you hate flying: is it that being contained in a small space with very limited leg room makes you uncomfortable, or is it that you are scared that there might be accident from which you may get injured or is it that flying for long hours makes you bored, or is it that the air is really dry in the airplane that your body just can't stand it?
2nd, acknowledge that all these reasons exist one way or another. However, also acknowledge that at least flying enables you to get to where you need to be in the least amount of hours.
3rd, let's deal with the practical challenge of: 'how do I get over these 12 hours'

For small space, limited leg room: Flying long hours usually does result in numb or sometimes even slightly swollen feet. Therefore, you should wear walking shoes and cotton socks when flying long hours. In the flight, take off your shoes to let your feet be free of any pressure. Once a while, get off your seat and walk around to flex your knees.

If you are scared of accident, ask yourself this question: what are the odds that accident may happen to me when I'm not flying? Chances are, the probability for an airplane accident is much lower than car accident. What's more important is that if we stress over things we have no control of (such as airplane accident), we tend to feel more unhappy. Focus on what you can control and enjoy the most of it...this leads to my answer to the 3rd problem above.

So, if you are bored flying long hours, ask yourself this: is there any past-time activities that I enjoy doing while seated? Watching TV, reading a book, playing Nitendo/PSP or writing something? These can all be done while you fly. So, take the time in the air to reward yourself with a big block of time to do your favorite past-time activity. Isn't that great?

I know, you hate drying your skin out. So do I. Make sure you bring a water bottle, even if it's empty (because of security requirements of certain airports). Fill up your water bottle when you are seated and continue drinking water (not soda...not Vitamin water or energy drink or others, just water) during the flight. This will help replenish the water lost from your body due to the airconditioning in the plane. In addition, make sure you fully moisturize your face before boarding the plane. Do not use makeup when you fly because dry air+make up does not do your face good. :-)

Did I forget to mention this last and one of the greatest past-time during flying...? Yes, don't forget that you can always catch up on sleep during long hour flights. Layer up your outfits so that you can use one of your outer jackets as blanket when you need it.

I hate flying too, but I have to do it for my job. This is a fear that many people have and it's very common. What I did was I went to my doctor and told him about my fear, what I felt while I was describing it, and what it felt like to think about flying. He prescribed Xanax for me and I take it an hour before flying, and 1 hour after I'm in the air. It's mild and it takes the edge off, while keeping you in the now (not making you feel "high"). It basically just gets my mind off flying and I can read a magazine, book, or just sleep.
If this is something you do not want to do, you can by some Tylenol PM or a sleeping pill and sleep the whole way. It really depends on you. I have also purchased an audio tape in which I listened to while flying that helps you breathe and relax.
The best thing is to research it on the Internet or ask your doctor. But like I said, it's much more common that you think. Good luck!

to make your flight more comfortable, try going to the wesite of the airline you are traveling with, find out from your itineray, what kind of plane you are flying in, they have layouts of each plane on the website, find a seat that is the first row on a partition of the plane, Example, the first row behind first class, then call the airline and request for a seat change to one of these seat, you will have more leg room and be able to streach out more, i fly very oftern, like 10 times a year, i do this every time, the sooner you do this the better, becuase alot of people know this.

to get over the fear of flying, its in the mind.

One thing I do, especially if the flight is a bit rough, is lean back and close my eyes. It is easy, then, to feel the plane floating through the air, kind of riding on it like waves. It is easy this way, for me at least, to remember that it is just air the plane is going through, and the plane is much stronger than the air.

Just remember that statistically you are far more likely to be injured in a car accident on the way to the airport than you are to be involved in a plane crash.
