Does the spray to keep cats from clawing furniture really work? I am getting new furniture and don't want my Yiddies to claw it to death. I have nail caps to put over their nails but want to take all precautions. I DO NOT believe in declawing but do I have any other options? Pleeese help!
Thank you!

Yes, some brands do...it's how I keep my cats off of things...especially the Christmas tree....!!! Most give off an odor that is offensive just to the cats, not you...ask your vet or local pet store for which brand(s) they may recommend...you an also spray the kitties with water from a squirt gun or use canned air (like you get to clean the computer)..however, take care not to spray right in their faces....my cats run now just "seeing" the canned air can... (they hate the noise it makes...we have never acutally sprayed it at them, just up in the air to make them pay attention...)...they will learn eventually...as a cat owner, however, you know that takes time and lots of patience...

I haven't tried the spray, but I have my doubts about its effectiveness. Nail caps and clipping claws (not declawing!) are effective. I trim my kitty's claws once a month and got him a scratching post which he learned to use almost immediately (sisal ones work the best). All I did is demonstrate how to the use the post (my husband laughing his head off as I did it) and he got it right away. Someone else I know suggested wrapping the bottom of new furniture with heavy duty plastic wrap during the first several weeks you have the furniture as a way to discourage the habit. It's easy and might work.

By the way, I taught my kitty to tolerate the clippers by giving him a kitty treat for each claw that gets clipped. And I do it in two sessions so he doesn't get frustrated or too full of treats.

The most effective thing I have used is the double-sided sticky tape that you put on the ends of the furniture where the cats like to scratch. They don't show much and don't have to be left on forever if the cats have a nice cat tree to use to trim their nails. The strips are available in pet stores for around ten dollars or you can buy the double-sided tape at a hardware store.

You always have to be on the other end of the squirt bottle if you try that one and it doesn't cover the times you are not around to do that. Once they get their scent on furniture they will continue to use it.

Cats will usually scratch on the ends of the furniture that they encounter first when entering a room. They mark their territory that way as well as taking care of their nails.

You could get a couple of scratching posts, spray some cat nip on them. You can buy cat nip spray in any pet store, comes in an aerosol can. I used to have 6 cats at one time. I had a post in every room too. I sprayed the posts with cat nip spray and put a few treats on the top of the post. Took each cat, one by one and led them to the post and to the top of it. They found the treats, loved the scent of the cat nip and never went for any of my furniture again. Hope this helps!

Give them an alternate scratching post which they will prefer to your furniture and you shouldn't have any problem. For instance, wrap a 4x4 pole about 3" with a sturdy base with jute rope. Attach a cat toy to the top and they'll get the hint.

Spray them with water when you see them doing something you want to curb them from.

Good luck.

I'm not sure but water does. Just put it in a spray bottle and spray your cat every time he/she jumps on it, they can't stand it and will take the hint after a few tries.

Just get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with water. Spritz them every time they attempt to get on your furniture.

No, all they do is stink up the place and stain your furniture. Reseach natural cat deterants would be my suggestion.

get a squirt bottle and fill it wiith warm water. they will eventually learn that when that bottle comes out they have done something wrong and you wont have to squirt them anymore. from my experience none of those sprays work.
