I don't know that this is true, but what would be the spiritual reason for such a law? Would they refuse to accept someone who was?

In addition to the above answers, why do people get tattoos in the first place? For vanity purposes. It's no different than geting breast augmentation or facial surgery, you do it because you would rather have your body look like this, or because you want to draw attention to this part of your body. You're hurting yourself under the assumption that you will appear more attractive in the eyes of others. Why would you need to do this? Why not just force the other person to accept you as you are, and more importantly, why not just accept yourself as you are?
Don't get me wrong, I know this isn't the same in every case. Some belonging to certain cultures do it out of religious rites, and some have meanings or importance to the person such as Bible verses or pictures of passed loved ones, etc. This is my belief and my way of understanding as to why tattoos aren't considered a good idea, and I don't expect everyone to agree or understand. We're all entitled to our own thoughts and ideas.

As far as refusing someone, no, I've never seen it happened. I've met many that have tattoos, male and female, and while it may be considered harmful in Islam, we don't reject someone because they chose to get one.

Hope it helps! Good luck!

It depends on two things, whether the tattoo is actually permanent i.e. injected below the skin with a needle, and whether you are a sunni or shiite muslim. Unless you have a bad reaction to the henna leading to scarring, no tattoo merely painted on the skin surface can be permanent without regular reapplication - eventually it must fade as the skin is renewed. In the Sunni tradition, the prophet is held to have condemned both the tattoo artist and the one tattooed, for maiming the creation of Allah, but in this case maiming is generally held to be permanent tattoos, not henna tattoos which do not pierce the skin and fade with time. In the Shi'a tradition as I understand it the rulings of the Grand Ayatollah are binding, and Ayatollahs Sistani and Khomeini have ruled that tattoos are allowed provided they do not prevent water from touching the skin when you are washing for prayer, and do not depict anything against Islam. Also in the shia tradition it would not be forbidden to have the names of Allah tattooed. The difference is because the Shia scholars do not recognise as reliable the hadith relied upon by the Sunni scholars in this case. Whether you follow one tradition or the other is of course a matter of your own conscience.

Spiritual reason are a couple:

1. hurting oneself is against God. hurting one self for beautification reasons is worse.

2. you cant change what god gave you. permanent tattoos change the way you look..you need to appreciate your skin for what it is.

There is no reason why Islam would not accept anyone who has done tattoos tho, mainly because the person has done these before they enter the religion, and after embracing Islam, your past life is of no concern.

However, you will begin to realize why tattoos are not allowed as you continue reading and gaining more knowledge about the religion.

As for people, dont let their judgements cloud your acts. Some muslims will judge you because you have a tattoo...but to be honest, there are more important things than having a tattooo on your arm. Things like: how much goodness are you giving to the world? how much do you gossip? do you lie a lot? things like that.

My mother always used to say: improve your inside before you improve your outside.

She was always right.

Keep your insides clean, pure and intentions well.

Afterwards, think about your outside.

Peace

Yes it is haraam in Islam for a person to get a tattoo. It is haraam because you are altering the body that ALLAH created, not to mention you can get HIV if you are tattooed with an infected needle. No a person with a tattoo can become a Muslim but should get the tattos burned off when they have enough money.

The idea is that you shouldn't do things to yourself that draw attention, show affiliation to anything other than God, or essentially scar yourself for fun.

Thank God. Besides, how many people have you met who got a tattoo when they were young and are now thoroughly embarrassed by it. I know quite a few.

They wouldn't reject you if you have a tattoo. There are lots of converts that do. But if you were a muslim and made the decision to get a tattoo, they would certainly frown on it.

Because in that religion its forbidden to hurt or inflict pain on oneself & tatooing indeed meets those 2 criterias. We dont need religion to tell us that tatooing is stupid & wrong.

Tattoos aren't the safest thing you can do, but banning it alone is proof of Islam's falsehood. You know what else causes skin cancer? The sun... Should we only stay indoors?
