There are two problems.

First, downloading music without paying for it is illegal. The RIAA has been actively filing lawsuits against people who do so. They've filed almost 20,000 lawsuits in the past several years and won all but a few. The law states that the fine is $750 - $150,000 for each song illegally downloaded or shared. Because the actual fines would be millions of dollard per user, most settle for fines of about $10,000 or so. One woman tried to fight it in court recently and lost - she had to pay about $30,000 plus court costs and lawyers' fees.

The second problem is security. Many people deliberately infect files that are traded on P2P networks with viruses, trojans, adware and spyware. They know there's no risk to them because you are committing a criminal act by downloading the file, so it's not like you can report them to the police. P2P networks are full of infected files, and your computer can be infected and help spread it. There's also the fact that by participating in a P2P network, you are making your computer into a server. This is a security risk. You are allowing others to copy data off of your hard drive. If you get a trojan of some sort, they could potentially copy any data they wanted, including bank account numbers and passwords. The nightmare scenario is that your computer is used to host child porn or other illegal content and you get busted for it. This has already happened with porn-oriented adware (http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/2007/01/is-this-miscarriage-of-justice.html)

Here are some articles on the prevalence of viruses etc in P2P networks:

http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.

You have to be wary of virus/trojan infected files.

Using Limewire is NOT illegal.

Downloading music is NOT illegal.

Downloading copyrighted music without the copyright holder's permission is called copyright infringment, and you can be subject to fines and/or legal trouble.
