Last night while watching the superbowl my husband consumed 4 pitchers of beer on his own. From what I understand, that is the equivelant to 20 beers (a case). He thinks he doesn't have a drinking problem. Do you? I think so.

That's not a lot of beer to him, as he does it often. He knows he's an alcoholic, but does nothing about it. He thinks every guy drinks that much and it's normal.

How often he consumes beer is more of an indicator that he has a problem. If he is consuming a large amount of beer daily, weekly or monthly then yes, he has a problem. Is your husband a big guy? Some guys honestly can consume large amounts of alcohol and not be too affected by it because they metabolize it so much faster than women. Does he do this every time he drinks or just for the superbowl? You cannot say someone has a problem based upon one incident with no info as to how big the person is or how much food they ate AND how many hours it took to consume this amount. He sounds like an average american male to me. Be happy it wasn't a fifth of liquor he downed. If that was the case and he needed that much every time he drank I would say he has a problem. It's certainly not good for his liver to drink that much in one day though.

There are a lot of factors you would have to look at. How big is he for one. A big guy can consume a lot of beer and not get as affected as a smaller person. How often does he drink? If he feels like he HAS to drink or makes excuses to drink then he may have a problem. But a night of getting absolutely blitzed every once in awhile doesn't make an alcoholic.

Well, I think most of guys drink a lot, but it doesn't make it a normal thing. I think he's an alcoholic and need some help. It's very bad for his health and he's gonna have a huge stomach: I call that a Budbelly!

That's A LOT of beer! Whether or not he has a drinking problem depends on more than one instance however. If he drinks like that every night, yes definately. If he normally just has one or two however, then no. But, if he drinks like that 3-4times a month it can be considered binge drinking which may be even worse than daily drinking.

It all depends on how often he drinks and moreso if he drinks to get drunk rather than being able to have one or two and stop. That would be a good indication of a problem. They say another good sign of a problem is drinking alone.
A glass of wine with dinner is one thing, but that many adult beverages regularly isnt good for you or anyone around you.

Thats quite a bit. Does he do that all the time or is it just a every once in a while deal. If he drinks that much multiple times per week I would say he has a problem.

That's alot. However, Super Bowl is somewhat of a special occassion, so if drank more for this occassion than usual, it was probably an isolated thing. If this is normal and he does it regularly, yes, its alot and yes, he probably needs some help in cutting back or quitting altogether.

Ask him if he can take a months break from drinking, if he refuses narrow it down bit by bit to week. If he cannot go a week I would suggest he gets proper support and counselling. Liver disease is extremely painful condition to die from.
