I believe they are cold cathode tubes.

I have the KDL-40XBR2. It is not LED backlit. I am pretty sure it uses a standard flourescent tube backlight.

BTW - the TV is the best I've ever seen, hands down, LED-lit or not. (Of course, I'm looking forward to those sets down the line, too.) I highly recommend it.
