Yes without a doubt. He touched more lives than any sportsman in history. Adored by millions of people of all race, colour, religion or background. At one time the most famous person and recognised face on the entire planet. His greatness in the ring is unquestionable - he was afraid of no-one and dodged no-one. He bought poise, speed and grace to a sport dominated by brawlers and sluggers and controlled by the Mob. A born entertainer he excited everyone and the masses tuned in to watch him fight. No other boxer in history has ever had the same appeal as Ali.

When looking purley at his boxing record we have to remember that they took away his licence to fight when he was at his peak - I wonder how great a fighter he may have been had they not forced him out of the sport for 2 and half years. Despite the Authorities doing their best to ostracise him, he still bounced back, spirit intact to eventually claim the title that was rightfully his.

His greatness outside the ring is also perfectly evident. A great campaigner for civil rights and did more to unite black and white than any other individual at a time when America was crying out for intervention, and his humanitarian work started before most people had even heard the word.

A couple of names always crop up when talking about Ali - Sonny Liston and Tyson. Well Liston was a Mob controlled thug who brawled as opposed to boxed, and Tyson is an ear biting animal and rapist. How these men can be compared to The Greatest of all Time is beyond me.

difficult 1, i prefer to call ali the greatest of his time ,rather than all time, he was the charismatic, arrogant champ, that stood up for what he belived in, he could talk the cocky talk and walk the walk, but , he did make a crap comeback, he nearly got beat by ernie shavers, should of lost to henry cooper( was given extra time to recover from knockdown when trainer angelo dundee cut his glo
ves between round and had to wait for replacment)

but then , u have fighters like rocky marciano 49 wins ,no defeats and retired champ, jack dempsey the mannassa mauler was of the biggest punchers ever (often knocked men outta the ring, not just out)

then you have recent fighters sugar ray leonard ,, won world titles at 3 different weights, fists of stone roberto duran, hagler , hearns , jones jnr , right up to floyyd mayweather jnr ,the list goes on so, if they all fought in the same time period he would be good but not great so ,, ali the greatest of HIS time not ALL TIME!!

No. Ever heard of Henry Armstrong? Or Ray Robinson? Willie Pep? Roberto Duran? Harry Greb? Sam Langford? Ezzard Charles? The list goes on. You could easily make a case for Ali not even being the best heavyweight (Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano).

He's up there with Joe Louis and Rockey Marciano the greatest brawler of all time. Rockey was also undefeated. Louis had size speed, boxing technique, and a wicked punch. Ali was probably the fastest heavy weight of all time. They were all great in their day and took on all comers. Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles and
others let you know you were in a fight.
