Hi Jenifer...Many people believe mothballs work, however they are considered toxic and should NOT be used. Here's more information on this:
http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/enotes/showarticle.cfm?id=89
MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

Consider using river rock on top of the soil to make access more difficult for your cat. Not only is it larger than pebbles which can easily be played with or accidentally ingested, but it is decorative too.

Additionally, if he hasn't been neutered consider having this done as soon as possible as he may be urine spraying the plants to mark territory. Nearly all shelters perform early spay/neuter as soon as a cat is over 8 weeks of age and weighs at least 2/3 pounds.

If you are located within the USA your can locate a free/low fee participating spay/neuter clinic from the following website: http://www.petsandanimals.org/spayneuter_services.html

Cover the soil of your potted plants with decorative rocks, to make the plants a less attractive spot to go to the toilet. There are also cat repellant spray products you can get at the pet store that you can apply to the pots to keep him away.

Even though you keep his box clean and changed, there may be something about the box, the litter, or the box location that he doesn't like - cats can be very picky about their boxes. This link has some great info that may help you figure out how to get him to prefer his box: http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm

Arm against the behavior: Buy some aquarium pebbles and one of those sprays meant to keep cats from spray urinating on certain spots from the pet shop. Put a think layer of aquarium pebbles on top of the soil of your potted plants and psra that layer with the ketty-off spray (the smell is meant to disuade cats from urinating in that spot). A cheap alternative is to cover the soil of your potted plants with a sheet of aluminium foil (cats hate aluminium or aluminum). Maybe try the cheap alternative first - it may be enough to disause kitty from using the potted plants as toilet. Whatever you do, please DO NOT use mothballs. These are highly toxic to cats and there is no way of telling whether a KITTEN is smart enough to know not to lick mothballs.

Personally, I think the aluminium will do the trick. Line your potted plants with them and keep them that wayuntil kitten is ver ver used to going to hs liter box to do his business.

put foil around the plants or cardboard over the soil in the plants. or keep the plants in a part of the house the kittens cant get to. I can't believe you are going to throw a helpless kitten outside to freeze to death or die in any number of cerconsances that are not pleasant. don't put your cat outside if you don't wish to take care of it anymore bring it to a no kill shelter where it can find a loving home.

putting thier nose in it wont do any good unless they are a dog. you need to keep reminding them where the litter box is fequently. sometimes cats dont like to use the box if its too dirty. make sure you clean it out often, sprinkle some baking soda in there too. they are smelling where they usually wee on the bed, so make sure you clean that up very well. clean the matress well too. Spray it with equal mixture of water and vinegar ( 1/2 cup hot water, 1/2 cup white vinegar) let that soak on the matress for a minute or two, then pat it dry. we had a cat that like to poo behind the tv, we did all this and it helped but sometimes there were accidents!

Get some chicken wire at the hardware store and put it over the soil, making sure that there are no sharp ends sticking out. This should discourage your cat from doing this. Don't leave him out, this may take some patience, but it will be worth it.

My cat used to love to sit in my potted plants - he kept pushing them over. So I bought some lava rock and lined the top of the soil with them. Voila! No more kitty butt in my plants. Lava rocks are inexpensive and look pretty nice.

This sounds weird but I had to do this myself. Go to the store and buy pure lemon juice and put it in your plants. They will not use the bathroom where their is lemon juice. Hope this helps.

This could also be a territorial act, he is getting close to the age where you can have him neutered.
