-vich is Russian AND Polish. Sorry asker, but that's the way it is. Polish -wicz is pronounced VICH. It's like Mc- in American names, it's impossible to tell whether the name is Scottish or Irish. -vich/-wicz is the exact equivalent in Slavic of the Mc-/O'- in Irish/Gaelic and the -son/-sen in Germanic, it means "son of". And to the person who said they never saw this in Russian? LMAO. You don't know any Russians, then. EVERY Russian male's middle name is Ivanovich, Mikhailovich, etc., just like every Russian woman's middle name is Ivanovna, Mikhailovna, etc. (daughter of). So -vich could be from just about ANY Slavic language.

If you are forcing someone to choose only between Polish or Russian, 'vich' is more a Russian thing. Polish would more likely be 'wicz'
The truth is it could be from Russia, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Croatia or Bulgaria and it's obviously not just Jews that use 'vich' at the end of the name!!

"vich" is the Slavic patronymic. it means "son of" as in Ivan Denissovich Shukhov : Ivan Shukhov son of Denis Shukhov. It is universally used in Russian names though, AFAIK, not in Polish, though it would be logical that Polish should have it too. The same suffix is also found in Slavic Balkan names, as -ic, the most common ending for Serb or Croatian surnames.
Of course, for Jewish names, it would be more common in Polish surnames, if only because Poland had a much more important and visible Jewish population, and one that has emigrated much more visibly.
