It depends on a lot of things. If you aren't required to file but had anything withheld for federal income taxes, you should file a return to get your withholding amount refunded to you.

If you had over $400 in self-employment income, you must file.

If you are a dependent you must file if you made over $5150 of income from a job. If some of your income is not from a job, then the limit can be much lower.

If you're single and made over $8450, you must file.

There are other limits for other filing statuses. If you're 65 or over, limits are higher in some cases.
