If you are flying or driving you do not need a passport. If you are flying you will be leaving the US and landing in the US so you do not have to clear customs. If you are driving and going through Canada you do not need a passport yet to cross the borders - your birth certificate will do - those regulations are not set to change until 2008 January.

Have a great trip - I hear Alaska is amazing!

If flying, no. If driving, you have to go through Canada. You go though the Border and Custom agents will check the ids of all people in car (you do not need a passport, only proper photo ids), and if you are traveling with pets, they must have the proper paperwork (proof of shots, etc.) They will ask why you are entering Canada, (of course the answer is to get to Alaska) and how long you plan to stay in Canada, etc. They will at times, do a vehicle search. The same goes for going back to lower 48 by way of Canada from Alaska.. You'll be stopped at the Border Patrol by US Custom agents as you re-enter from Canada.

Alaska IS part of the US, but if driving, you can't get there without going through Canada..
Also... You can NOT bring fruit, plants, etc.

You shouldn't if your flying because Alaska is in the United States. Now on the other hand if you are driving you might because more then likely you would be driving through Canada

You shouldn't need one since Alaska is part of the USA even if you drove through Canada as long as you don't stop you should be fine.
