Did anyone else think that Lutter was going to win if he got the takedowns? Lutter was talking too much about how great his ground game was, he had me convinced. He was saying that Silva had never seen jujitsu like Lutter was going to bring. Well Lutter was able to land the takedowns but wasn't good enough on the ground to win. Surprised?

No. UFC wasn't going to talk up how good Silva's ground game was. He has a black belt in BJJ, so he is no slouch. Lutter did pretty well on the ground. I though when he had Silva in full mount that he might have had him. If Silva hadn't caught him with a kick to the head from his back, he probably wouldn't have got him in the triangle. Silva definitely didn't have the confidence that he did against Franklin or Leben because he knew his stand up was superior and wasn't worried about getting taken down like he was with Lutter. Silva didn't want to get taken down, he knew that would make the fight way to close.

There's very little chance of victory for a fighter who's dropped almost 20 pounds two days before a fight. Travis Lutter impressed me by lasting two rounds! Even with his sluggish take down attempts, he still managed to get the champ to the ground (which doesn't say much about Silva). Once Travis got him down, he didn't stay busy enough to submit Silva. The champ does have good defense on the ground, but I was surprised he actually got a lock on Lutter. Travis got sloppy, before and during the fight, plain and simple. You can't expect to become a champion with a piss poor work ethic.

Silva has good defense. But watch, someone with great takedown and ground and pound skills is going to take Silva down and pound the hell out of him and win the title. Who is that going to be? It's hard to say. There is not alot of talent in this division. Why do you think Rich Franklin was Champion for so long? It's not like he has been truly tested by someone with Silva's striking ability before. But there are some up and comers who will eventually challenge Silva. Keep an eye out for Kendall Grove to improve and challenge Silva or whomever has the title at the time.

I think I actually disagree with all of the answers here because not one person mentioned the fact that because Travis was not disciplined enough to drop weigh early, he completely drained his entire body the night before the fight, hence leaving him with no energy to fight. He spent all morning the day of the weigh-ins trying to cut and ended up spend like almost 4 hours in the sauna in two separate times.

With the in mind, I would say that Lutter's talk could've easily been considered "Backed-Up". Take that same fight and take away the weigh cut the day before and I think we easily would have a new champion today.
He was taking down Sylvia at will. Sylvia did not show any, any dominance and ended up beating a tired fighter.

Well not with his lack of meeting the weight. I think that he did a pretty good job considering what he did to himself physically before the fight. However, I was disapointed that he didn't meet his weight and therefore it wasn't a title match. What is up with that? You would think by now a guy like Lutter would know how to meet weight. It is almost like subconsciously he didn't want to meet weight for whatever reason. Like maybe that way if he lost he could blame it on the weight and if he won, he would know it was possible and then do a rematch for the title having the confidence. I dunno, but I thought it was dumb.

A great fighter doesn't have to use different techniques on the ground that he doesn't use standing up and vice versa. A striker should be able to strike even from his back. It's just a matter of being comfortable in the position you are in.

Lutter wasn't in a wrestling match where you get points for take-downs. In a fight you have to finish your opponent and that's where he was lacking. In competition I have often allowed my opponent to take me down because I am comfortable working from the ground but my take-downs need more work. So I let him shoot in, but in reality I am still in control.
