Do you realize your asking how to negotiate with an honest salesman?
Why can’t you both win?
Good salesman rely on repeat business. He provided the research you should have already done.
Not all salesman “cheat”.
Buy the car and refer your friends to him.

If it's a second hand car tell him that you know he paid 15 thousand or less for it. If it's a new car tell him you know he paid 15 thousand or less from it. He will act insulted and say "We don't get cars that cheap" Always remember these guys are the biggest liars on the face of the Earth. And Those multi million dollar dealerships and thier 100K salaries to salesmen do not come from making only 1000 dollars on each car. You have to give a price and stick to it. No negotiation, just walk and go somewhere else. Once you believe even one word out of their mouth. They have you.
PS
once you are at the table and they say ok i am going to go run the numbers through what is the highest amount you can pay a month for this car stick with your same price like for example he brought you to the table to talk numbers and your almost ready to sign your life away lol and you both set a price of 300 a month then he says ok let me go run the numbers they take two steps away from you and turn around and say how much could you be able to pay if we cant get you this car for this much a month and you say i could pay 400 WRONG ANSWER he just jumped the price up on you with out you even knowing and didnt do any thing but take two steps away.you see how they liek to screw ppl.If 300 brought you to the table then 300 will let you drive off in the car you wanted depending on you credit you have to take that into account as well.

Tell the sales person that these prices are average, and there is no way that a cars price could be determined just by looking on the Internet, these prices are usually national and not local.
I usually don’t even bother with that; tell him/her that you are going to buy the car from the best priced dealership, just tell them that you saw an ad somewhere that was for a lower price. The scariest thing you can do to a sales person if you have already sat down and started negotiations is to just get up and walk away. I had sales managers calling me just couple minutes afterward with the price I was asking for.
Good luck.

The value of anything is what a buyer is willing to pay for that item. It doesn't matter what that item is. KBB and Edmunds are computer generated results based on statistics, mathematics and market averages.
You start your negotiations at the price you are willing to pay for the car, period.
If you don't want his car at the price he's asking for it, walk away. If he feels he can find another buy for the car, or he can sell it for more he will let you walk. If he feels you're offering something reasonable, he'll start the negotiations with what you're willing to pay.
Just remember, you have a choice on where to purchase, just as if that specific car is the one you want, and he's got the only supply. Then he can demand any price he pleases.

kbb and edmunds are notoriously high with their estimates, and every dealer knows it. thats why they are so happy to print it out for you. do yourself a favor and look on ebay, and in various classified ads. print off any vehicles that are similar to what you are looking at buying. usually if you can tell a dealer that you can get the same car somewhere else for cheaper, then they may be willing to come down a bit for you.
also, try to find flaws with the car. scratches, funny noises, wear and tear... that stuff will help you negotiate a lower price.
and if you cant negotiate a lower price, see if they can include more free stuff... warranty, new tires, free tank of gas, an accessory you were interested in... dealers always give themselves room to breathe on the price, so you can always get them to go lower.

Do your homework before making an offer. Be sure it is fair for BOTH parties.
State what you are willing to pay. If they do not come to your terms walk out. When the salesman sees you are firm on your offer, IF THEY NEED TO MAKE THE SALE, he will adjust the offer.
Remember, the car dealer is in business to make money, not to give you a free deal.

the funny thing is.. if it was YOU who brought the printout of KBB and it showed that your car is worth more than what he is offering, they would go on a tirade explaining how the KBB value means nothing and how that is based only on a sample car.
You take it from there. They're full of sh*t and they know it.
Walk away and try somewhere else.
Also, KBB tends to go high. Try http://www.nada.com. A lot of banks go from that instead. Honestly.

Easy:
"this is what I am going to pay - yes or no?". But be prepared to leave which they will unlikely let you do. Don't get into details because they are better at their weird games, and they will manage to screw you. Also, do NOT let them get you into unrelated topics like financing, trade-in, etc. - take one step at a time. "Yes or no" approach works best with the crooks.

You can't change apples and oranges.
If he starts at msrp (window) then your car starts at suggest retail price.
Ask him what it would take to buy the car for cash. Use that figure to determine how much you will pay difference. THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGURE...The difference.
Good Luck
