when i watch news or music vids,clips etc i have no sound. yet it works fine on my media player?

Try these:
1. Turn on your speakers
2. mess with the volume on the speakers.
3. Check the cables, maybe you pulled it out.
4. mess with the master volume control in the control pannel or in the task bar.
5. Check volume controls in whatever app is playing the files.
6. If none of these work, it could be onboard/audio card has gone bad.

Have you checked the volume control in accessories>entertainment to see whether the sound/volume is on or it is not in mute?
