First off, remember that YOU want a dog that is good with your son. Don't get your son a dog, it will never work. Unless you want one, dont get it. Now with that said...

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Almost any breed of dog can be good with cats. I would be more concerned about breed considering your son's age. Very small dogs are usually not a good idea since young children may accidentally play too rough and hurt the dog. Mixed breed dogs often are less agressive than certain pure breed dogs. If you take your son with you to your local animal shelter, you can let your son interact with various dogs there so that you can watch and see if each one seems like a good match or not. (Also, most of the people who work at those shelters can help guide you to dogs that would be more likely to do well with both your son and your cats.) I have 1 dog and 4 cats who all get along very well. My dog is an Australian Cattle Dog who i rescued as a puppy.

First... don't ever buy a dog for a kid!!! It's the worst thing you can do for a dog. Will a 3yr old kid pick up the waste, walk him every day, do the obeissance, clean him dog and play with him?

I heard to much stories of dog being return or put asleep because mom and dad didn't realise that a kid will "play" with dog 5 minutes and then move to something else. So the dog is put aside, start to be the "stupid dog" because he has bad behaviors.

If you're really, personnaly, ready to raise a dog, you can't go wrong with a Lab or Golden but they are big dog and need regular maintenance and exercise and more money for food.
Bichon Frise, Lhasa Apso, Miniature Poodle, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian are small breed that require small dose exercise and
cheaper on food. But remember, even if small, all dog need obeissance, exercise and maintenance.

Have fun with your futur dog but remember to buy it for the good reason.

Thanks.

any dog can be traied with cats if its purchased young enough labradores are great with kids and relitivly easy to train but i think the best tempered dogs have to be mixed breeds they live longer as there is not as much imbreeeding in there past and they are cheeper and 1 of a kind
