They get there through the placenta, which is how the Mother gives nutrients to her baby.
Cigarettes cause your baby to have a low birth weight, which puts it at risk for many medical problems from the start. And can carry on for the baby's whole life.
Alcohol can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, which is a form of brain damage to the baby. They have learning disabilities and this lasts all their life.

Now, doesn't that make you want to go out and drink and smoke???
It is selfish to do this to a baby.

the poisons and alcohol enter your blood through the lungs or stomach linings, and then the baby shares your blood, so gets the same poisons. except their liver and brain is much more delicate, so has greater effects on them,

Through the blood stream. If you are doing either of these and you are pregnant, please stop.

Look up fetal alcohol syndrome. Also look up cigarettes and pregnancy. There is a ton of information on the net about both subjects.

the scary thing is my gf smoked until she found out she was pregnant. she then quit. after our baby was born, the midwife was showing the placenta to a trainee and me. she pointed out all the calcified portions of the placenta due to smoking. luckly he's healthy and gorgeous but was a real shocker to see that.
Basically means your starving the foetus of oxygen and nutrients.
