most people use a crate as a safe place to keep their dog while they are not home, it also helps housetraining because most dogs won't go while they are in their crate. some people crate their dogs at night to sleep also. it is really up to you. i recommend crate training right away, so anytime you need to have your dog in the crate you can. once the dog is crate trained, if you want him/her to sleep on a cute little bed at night, or while you are home during the day to supervise go right ahead and let him/her. (they make such adorable beds for tiny dogs!) when you crate your dog is really up to you.

I have seen on pet shows it is better to crate your animal when you are gone from them as it makes them feel safe, plus it will keep them from messing all over the house until they are potty trained. If it is a very small Yorkie like a teacup they have to be taken out to potty about every 30 minutes especially when they are very young and even after they are grown their bladders are small and they cannot hold it as well as bigger dogs.
Good Luck you have a lot of work ahead of you. Puppies are a big responsibility.

When your Yorkie is potty trained...I would make the switch. Which it might take a while, Yorkies are very stubborn, especially if you don't show them any love. My yorkie took a long time to potty train and she has accidents every once in a while but it's not as bad as it use to be.
I was told that they were hard to train, they were right, but I don't regret getting her. She's the sweetest dog I've ever known. She loves to play, take naps, or just watch tv w/ you. They can be a hand full but it'll be worth it.

In regards to a puppy, the crate is usually used for the initial house-breaking and adjustment to the new home. When your dog is house-broken and is done teething, then you can let him sleep in a bed rather then a crate. There is no definitive time period for house-breaking as it depends on the dog and on how much time you are willing to devote to his training.

It will depend on your puppy. I have crate trained three dogs, and now that they are adults they roam the house when I'm not home. I went by each personality and their maturity level. My one Lab was out of the crate at seven mos. My male needed 18 mos. before he was trustworthy. They all housebroke easily, I had to wait for the chewing to subside.
