I am african American and my girl friend is hispanic. We have been dating about 6 months. We are equally yoked, and see a long future in our relationship. Her parents don't approve of her dating me. They would like for her to stay within her race or date a white guy. They have a poor image of blacks. My family is all college educated and have good careers. It gets old always having to prove yourself to be a good person just because of race.
I don't mind reaching out to them because I'm in love with their daughter, but they need to let go of the steroetypes.

People have a poor image of African American in general because of the media promoting these silly stereotypes. You sound as if you have a lot going for you, and if your girlfriend loves you and knows the real you then your marriage shouldn't be a problem. As for her parents, if they are sensible people they should be able to see your true colors over time. I wish people knew that we are all not on welfare, uneducated, "bling" wearing, baby making machines, because it's simply not true. But until people can get over their prejudices you will have to ride out the storm. Good luck. And if necessary remind them of all of the stupid stereotypes associated with themselves and ask if they would like to be judged by some superficial bull. Hmmmm something to think about.

Your name...metrorider leads me to believe that you may be here in my area (Washington, DC).

That said, I am surprised that you find that going on much. Yes, Latino cultures for the most part (those cloaked in heavy traditional values) would prefer their daughters to marry someone more a part of the stereotypical "American Dream".

I am an interracial girl (African-American and French/Native American) and I hear that a lot in this area. But I also see Latinos and AAs dating very much.

I say, keep doing what you're doing. I think any family can see how much you truly care for her, and you guys sound like you're in love. They will come around, but in the meantime, keep loving her and taking care of her and let the chips fall where they may.

Good Luck!

Um yea there are many traditional hispanics that for some stupid reason believe that you should stay in you race which goes for many other races. My mom and dad say the same but I just dont give a shiit. There comes in time in life where you stop listening to Mommy and Daddy and raise yourself. Who cares what this ppl think and jsut as long as shes with you thats all that matters.

well i took a anthroplogy course and i learned there only 3 differnt race white black and asian but there differnt cluture btw really dont know the differnce.... well with time maybe you can prove to them that your a good guy.... and there lot stereotypes on hispanic's so i dont know why they acting like there culture is better then any one else.. you have your good and bad and race doesnt have nothing to do with it. i know how you feel bc i date white guys and im black and at times i get crap from black people and from white. so far his parents been cool about it but his sister wish i was white. the only thing that really separates us is the way we grew up like i work hard to get where i am as for as carrier and education and he really doesnt have to work as hard as me bc well they have money. but that besides your point all i can say is dont stress it for now bc things happen and things dont last forever plus 4 years down the road they might just accpect you like there own so things take time

I am Hispanic and yes there is racism in our culture!

We do have the blackest of blacks and the whitest of whites in our culture. Go figure!

I have six sisters and non where attracted to black men. One dated a black man out of curiosity for a short while. And one married a dark latino, that is as far as things ever went.

stereotyping is always going to happen but you just have to stop trying to please them cause as long as she is happy with you they will have to accept you, it happen with me and my fiancee, i am spanish and he is jewish, at the beginning his family thought i wasnt good enough cause i'm not jewish but now we have been together for 4 years and live together, i used to get bump-out about the fact that my race bother them and we as a couple were having arguements about it, but when we decided to make each other happy not the rest of the world, it got better and we are engaged, good luck

some are, some aren't. continue to date her and treat her well, always treat them with respect and they may come around. In any case, as long as you two are happy, it doesn't really matter what they think

i mean so wat they don't approve of u. if i was in love with someone and my parents don't approve of it cuz their aren't the same race, i would still date them cuz i'm in love and they can't break that. just prove her parents wrong. prove to them that all black people aren't the same, prove to them ur a wonderful guy and would treat her right. just prove urself to them!!!
