The last three years or so I have been obsessed with Italian (language, culture, etc.). I have tried to teach myself the language but haven't gotten very far. Where I live there is little opportunity for learning Italian. I was going to take lessons with one guy but it ended badly and unfortunately he is connected to a lot of other teachers and Italian groups so I feel like my opportunities for learning the language has decreased. I had given up after my falling out with that guy, but there are times when I still feel that urge to learn/experience more w/Italian. My dilema is this: I have been considering taking up Spanish instead, there are more opportunities to learn it and its use has become quite widespread but I feel more passionate about learning Italian. What would you do in this situation?

I'd learn both and practice each whenever. Spanish and Italian are close enough for your Spanish to help your Italian immensely.

I kind of feel the same way, only about Portuguese. I get to speak Spanish much more often and it helps keep my Latin-based languages in order.

You know, it is a difficult question for me to answer. I myself am a Little bit passionate about Italian as you and also found it difficult to learn even the basics of Italian. ( although I finally managed to do it by myself)

Spanish teaching is really widespread today, and it always seems to be the best choice for anyone's career. If you feel like dumping your Italian teacher and do Spanish, this should be all right, but what if you were to stop and think of what your heart is asking you for?

You needn't learn Italian with your present teacher, since there are always further options for you to chose from. If I were you, I wouldn't just let it go: since you really like Italian culture, try to find out if there are other teachers with open classes in your area and go for it!

It may be so rewarding learn Italian that (once you assume you really like it) you may even end up working for an Italian company one day, and will manage to see things in a very relative fashion: although Spanish is THE language to speak today, you may find it useful to learn an awkward language (Italian is) that is spoken in only one country around the world.

If I were you, I would go for (brand new) exciting Italian classes.

If that is the only guy that can get u in touch to italian community, I would try to contact him and explain calmly what I want. It's enough if u get just one phone number of an italian. U don't have to stay connected with that guy, just get what u want. Or u can look for teachers yourself. Go to the university or to a school that teaches italian and get in touch with the teachers there. More than that, watch italian movies, italian TV, because this would be great practice of the language. Do what u're passionate about, that's my advice.

If Italian is your passion you should pursue it and not settle. I am willing o bet there are online courses you could take or cd/dvd book packages to order from amazon or barnes and noble , maybe even see about establishing a pen-pal relationship with someone from or living in Italy to guide you
