Hi, my son was 8 months old the first time we flew w/ him. I would recommend taking your own car seat to avoid any problems later on. Also, don't forget the stroller, the airlines vary on what you can take but most do allow the stroller, car seat and diaper bag. My son slept the entire time so we got lucky. His ears did bother him when we were landing so you might make sure you have a drink for him to have during that time (or a pacifier if he/she uses one). As far as what to take, just bring what you would normally use at home, it depends on where you are going and what you will be doing.

I've been told by my kids' pediatrician that it's okay to give your infant benadryl before a plane trip to make them sleepy. Then they will be able to sleep during the flight. Also try and have the baby be drinking on take-off and landing so that they don't notice the pressure in the ears as much.
As far as what to bring, I don't know where you are going or staying so it's difficult to say. Maybe call the place where you will be staying to see if it's at all possible that they have travel crib or playpen for your baby to sleep in. Or if they could borrow one from somebody they knew. I would probably bring my own car seat and have it in the airplane for the baby to be able to sit in during the flight so you don't have to hold it the entire time. You have to make sure the car seat is FAA approved or you may not be able to bring it. I would also encourage you to bring a stroller. Try and bring most of the baby's things in a carry on and a change of clothes and a few toiletries for yourself as well. Depending on where you are going, bring more than you think you will need in case you can't get to a store.

Spend the extra money and purchase a seat for the baby instead of flying with a lap baby. You end up with twice the checked and carry-on baggage allowance, plus it is MUCH safer to have the baby buckled into his car-seat in his own airplane seat than on his lap. I've seen lap babies bounce out of mom's arms and hit the floor pretty hard several times now, and that was just from turbulence. If you are ever in an emergency situation with a lap-baby, I don't think their chances of surviving would be very high. Not worth taking that kind of risk just to save a few hundred dollars.

I am sure you didn't check the airlines. Some airlines make you pay a full price for an infant since they do take up a seat. And make sure you carry plenty of wipeds. The flight attendants aren't as friendly as you think. And make sure you request a aisle seat. You need this to get up as often as you can. To be on the safe side call the airlines you are using and ask questions. Have fun on your trip and safe journey. And your baby will sleep the entire journey.

try to book a flight around their nap time. take their favorite toy &/or familiar items to keep them occupied. sometimes it's easier to make a quick stop and pick up travel size items of bath items and such then to pack all of them. diapers and such are so bulky i usually take enough for the trip, then go to a pharmacy as soon as i get there. the less of the extras you pack the you can take more items they are familiar with so they are comfortable. a baby is a lot to travel with much less lugging stuff around that you can get when you arrive on vacation and use it all before you leave to come home. there are many homeopathic remedies also that you can give babies (found at most health food stores) to help keep them calm during the trip and rest peacefully in their new location. have a good trip.
