Older people shrink because of loss bone mass or compression of the spine. See a doctor.

As you get older, you tend to shrink (I'm not sure if you'd refer to it as growing shorter)
Sometimes it's a question of posture of curvature of the spine.

This normally only happens later in life, 18 would really be an exception.
Most people probably lose 1 to 2 inches as they hit 50 years of age. My grandmother went from 5'6" to about 4'9" but is was a curvature of the spin in her case.

Growing shorter is an oxymoron. We cannot "grow" shorter.

We grow to a specific height based on our genetic composition then stop. Around the age of 30, we begin to shrink.

What I have heard is that after a while, that the earths gravitational pressure will slowly push our bodies down against the earth and make us shorter.

I have also heard that you are taller in the morning than in the afternoon. Why? Im not sure myself
