The operation itself takes about 1/2 hour or so.
After surgery, when she's home, she's going to be a little out of it for the rest of the day. Anesthesia takes abotu 6 - 8 hours to get out of an animals system, but every animal is different in regards to their reaction to anesthesia, just like people. She should get her pain medication as prescribed by the veterinarian.
She probably won't want to eat anything tonight, but always offer water. Be sure that she doesn't jump up on the couch or the bed for the next few days. She probably won't (animals are pretty good at monitoring themselves after surgery). Probably by the third day, she'll be back to acting like her old self.
Of course, keep an eye on her and her incision site. If anything looks out of sorts call the vet back.
Otherwise she should be ok.
You may want to keep her away from the other cats at least for the time when she comes home after surgery. Just to be on the safe side.

Find somewhere quiet where she can be on her own away from the others. She may remain fairly docile for a while but if she's quite young she could be up and about in no time.
Just be there for her - yes, at the expense of your other cats. They'll cope without you. Just dish out some food and freshen their water.
Your focus will be on this kitty after her big operation. She needs to know that you are there for her as you are her mommy now. When she wakes up, she'll be a bit disoriented. Make sure you are beside her to comfort her and even hold her. keep her warm and have some water nearby. She may not want to eat until the effects of the anaesthetic fully wears off.
She'll need attention for a day or two until the wound heals more securely. She'll be tender so take care when you pick her up. If she lets out a little mew, set her down again so she can make herself comfortable. But most of all just be there for her. That'll help her the most.
When my kitty was spayed, she recovered by lying in a big red beanbag. But I was there for her and we have a special bond now. She always turns to me if she is ill or needs something. She doesn't turn to anyone else in the house - unless I am at work.

Well these days they just get a tiny little cut, with only a few stitches, just try to make sure she dosnt pull them out too soon, if you can see smooth muscle in the wound take her back to the vet to get re-stitched, get her some tasty food, if you have a spare room, make her a cozy place in there with food water etc and let her sleep, check on her every few hours, if you dont, it will have to be your room!
If you have the funds, buy a puppy cage, petsmart have them, they are brilliant if you have more than one pet, they can be a hospital, convalesant space, and if you have to medicate a pet you can feed them in it and the other animals wont get it, get one big enough for a small litter tray, a bed, and food bowls, put the cage in a quiet spot, under the stairs or something, and the cat can see everybody, but cant get into trouble, and the other cats cant interfere.
It will be useful many times over, and they fold flat!

You can pretty much do anything you usually do with the cat-according to my cat vet book. If you really want to do something the least and best thing to do is be a little calmer, make sure it has fresh food and water, and mabe make a small bed for him/her. Your cat may loose a small part of it's appetite depeding on how old it is.With in a couple of taking your cat home days you should stop being so cautious. Male cats have different reactions than Females. PS, I'm only nine but it does not mean I'm dum. The whole family knows I'm smarter at animals than them!

omg i know EXACTLY what your going thru, right now, actually. i have four cats, and our fifth is getting neutered today, and im worried. its a he tho, not a she. well id say the operation will probably take about 2-3 hours, depending on the anesthesia that they use as well as the vet service you have. good luck to you and your cat and i hope it all goes well! as for after the op, you cat may act strangely but give her time to adjust. if she acts sick, chances are its just the normal cat behavior after her surgery. she will most likely recover in a matter of weeks, but most likely no more than 1 month or so.

You will need to separate her from your other cats for at least the first day or two. She will need to be in a quiet environment. The vet will probably give you pain meds to bring home and these will make her very sleepy so keeping her calm shouldn't be too difficult. If you let her outside, I would keep her inside until the sutures are removed. Check the incision site daily for swelling and discoloration. Good for you for being a responsible pet owner!

First thing is use shredded paper in her litter box instead of regular litter, for at least a week to a week and a half, his prevents litter and any body fluids from getting into her sutures (stiches) and I would keep her in a separate room for the first few days. This will cut down on too much extra activity and allow her to rest and heal. Usually you drop off your pet in the AM and pick them up later that day or the next day.

Dont worry she will be fine, once she comes home she will still be groggy from the operation so she will want somewhere quiet to sleep. I got mine done when she was a kitten and had 2 male kittens at the same time, as far as i can remember they had a sniff at her cause they knew somehting had happened to her but other than that they left her alone.
It didnt take her that long to recover. I had to take her in in the morning and got her back in the afternoon.

Hi,
Female cats get spayed and male vats get neutered : )
You will need to keep her separated for a few days at least. She needs to be kept quiet. I just had my male neutered and I felt the same as you. Don't worry, your vet will give you all the instructions you need.

if your female cat is getting neutered heshe may have some serious gender confusion. steer himshe towards the life of a girl kitty by buying only pink toys and sparkly pink collars, maybe invest in a leapord print cat bed with pink lining that says princess. most importantly, be very accepting of herhim, no matter what!
