My (male) dog Pyro was attempting to procreate with my 12 year old calico cat, who is also male. What could be the cause of this behavior?

It's perfectly normal. He wasn't attempting to do anything sexual - this is just dominant behavior. Mounting is a way for most animals to establish who's boss.

I don't know why they do that. I had a dog that tried to procreate with a stuffed animal. And he was neutered! I asked the vet about it ans she said it was a sign of dominance. Needless to say, I gave him a scolding (not physical) and he didn't do it again. At least not that I was aware of!

Not at all unusual. Our poms used to try to mount the cat...and vice versa. We even had a rabbit once that was always trying to mount our cat.

It's called animal nature! Get the dog neutered and this will eliminate this problem.
