It depends on the person. Some people are lacking in some way or another so use the idea of a deity to fill in the gaps in their lives, whereas others aren't lacking and thus don't have such aneed.

For me belief in God has been more beneficial that I could have ever imagined. Because of Belief in God I worked for 8 1/2 years in a Christian Drama Company (Covenant Players) and got to travel all over the world. Because of my Belief in God, I've been places I never would have imagined, I've found my belief in God has kept me strong when everything around me has fallen apart. It's kept me sane working temp jobs while I'm looking for a permanent job. It's helped me more than I can ever say.

As you can see from certain responses you've already received (ie: Belief in the right God is"), there is no right place to start in here. However, to answer your question, I believe that belief in God in any form is more harmful. One principle rule I live by is that "Religion isn't worth the body count". No God worth believing in is worth killing for. If Gods do exist, then their existence would be infinite, but our lives are short, precious, and the only ones we'll have, so any God worth believing in would rather we just live and let live instead of going to war over a difference of opinions. I'm neither atheistic nor am I agnostic - I'm acedic and it's the reasons mentioned above that have brought me to this mindset. I'm disgusted with religions due to the words and actions of the vast majority of the people that follow them. Wasted lives are still wasted, no matter WHOSE name they died or were killed in.

It depends on your understanding of God
If you believe that God is humanlike, then it's probably going to be detrimental. If you think that God banishes people to a place called Hell, that will also be detrimental.
It is my belief that God is Nature, and everything in it, and it has never served me wrong.

It may be beneficial to some people because it gives them hope and something to look forward to. As a non believer, I still have hope that something might be better in the after life, but I feel that its impossible

Everything in our world can either be beneficial or detrimental. It all depends on your underlying "intent." Consequently...
God belief, in all myriad forms that you can find it, can be a good thing if it provides something positive in your life. It becomes a detriment if it diminishes your life or if you try and force your personal beliefs on others.

Beneficial - because no man is an island and the belief in a higher power can be very liberating. You have a purpose - to serve-you have unconditional love and forgiveness. Without G-d you are just here and that is sad.

I believe in God and it is beneficial in my opinion. When I feel as if I have NO ONE who is here for me and wants to see me better myself, then my belief in God lets me know that I have someone else who is out here watching me and lobving me. it defienitely puts a positive in all the negatives i see. Also, I feel like a stronger person because I believe in God. Believing in God just shows that you do not need to physically see something/one to know that it/He exists. hope I helped

the idea of god (because of course god does not exist) is the most detrimental force in the history of mankind.
No other force in history has held people back for longer and for the wrong reasons than the idea that a magic sky-pixie dissaproves of one behaviour and approves of another.

It is beneficial when it encourages mutual respect amongst people.
But when the human ego takes on the responsibility of misinterpreting God's word to suite itself, then you end up with alot of people dying in the name of what is supposed to be one God, trying to prove that each one is superior to the other.
