First, condolences on your cat's death.

(To those who say vets don't give you the body back: Yes, they do, especially if the owner requests it.)

I am assuming you do not have a back yard where you can bury your cat, or else have dogs who will probably dig it up again... bad thought.

You can get in trouble for putting animals in the trash, yes, but it really depends on your county or city garbage collection laws. Some places have no problem with it; other places don't like the health hazard it might pose to garbage collectors.

So, no, I don't suggest putting the body in the trash.

You should have left the body at the vet's; he is used to disposing of animals and probably has access to an incinerator or arrangements with your city's garbage system. Since you do not seem to be very sentimental about your cat's body--after all, it isn't truly your pet anymore after it has died--the suggestions of pet cemeteries and cremation might mean paying too much money for you; but these are still options if you decide you want to be a bit sentimental after all, or if you are embarassed about going back to the vet and admitting you don't know what to do with your cat's body.

If you have to put the body in the garbage, double-bag it and put it into a box. This should keep any animals from smelling the body, and keep the garbage men from detecting what could be a minor civil violation of your city's garbage ordinances.

I suggest keeping your cat's tags or some memento, especially if you don't have a lot of pictures; whether you are sentimental about the body or not, you will want to remember your cat.

Are you a freaking moron? Bury the cat. If you were descent enough to take it to the vet to have it put to sleep bury the cat. You sould like an idiot. That is the most ludicris thing I think I have ever heard. Why don't we just throw your *** in the trash when you die.
And, Sara S.............obviously, you've been misled. Vets DO give the animal back. Where do you go. This is a general practice. A very common practice. You don't get the animal back ONLY if you don't want it back. It is yours...........not the vets.

The vet would've given you an option to take the body or have them dispose of it. They usually freeze them then send them somewhere for a mass cremation since you are not allowed to just throw them in the trash. yes, in most localities you will get in trouble for improper disposal if you throw it away, not to mention it's disrespectful. Call animal control and see if they have a place you can take it.

If you want to dispose of it you should have told the vet to cremate the poor thing! If not bury it! If you throw it in the trash or bury it in a spot that isn't your property you can get a huge fine for improper disposal!

Most Vets in my WILL give you your animal back. It is not illegal to throw your cat in the trash but I would recommend burying it instead

No, you should bring it back to the vet for proper disposal (cremation). Usually they only give back the animal if you wanted it to bury yourself. Most municipalities frown on that though. We offer cremation with the option of getting the pet back or having a general cremation where you don't get the ashes back. If the client requests the pet back (as I always do), then at our clinic, with my vet, you can get the animal back. We bury our beloved pets in the backyard.

It's disturbing that you'd throw out your pet....why have one if you just think it's garbage?

Sorry for your loss?

I am amazed at the number of people who think a VET wont give a dead animal back ! Its your pet...they give it back if you want it ! In our area its not legal to throw a pet in the garbage ( you could get a fine ) and you cant bury animals on your property either ( again...if a neighbor saw they could call and you would be fined ) You have to either make arrangements for burial at the pet cemetary or have the animal cremated....or call animal control to remove the animal for you.

I have worked at a vet clinic and I know that they will not give back the animal. the only way they do that is if you want it to be cremated and they send it away to get it done then call you when it comes back. That is sick to even think its ok to do that to an animal let alone your PET!!!!!????

no i think not but it will reek up your house and the dump and your car if you drive it there even if its only there for a few minutes. thats really kind of disgusting. your normal standard options would be to bury it (cats are easy to bury as they dont have to be buried deep and theyre not all that big) or to freeze it. having a dead cat in your freezer can be somewhat disturbing tho, so id go with the burying option. thats just me tho.

You can, but why don't you bring it to a pet cemetery for cremation, the vet should have offered to dispose of it for you...I call him up and see if you can bring it back...not nice to just throw in trash!
