Is Metairie a safe place to stay in New Orleans. My neighgboor use to live there, and she said it would be ok if I did not go out at night. That did not sound "safe" to me.

metairie is nowhere near the french quarter. it's a suburb, and it's as safe as you're going to get down here. there aren't many, if any, murders happening in Metairie. i would avoid the area known as "fat city" which does have a few budget hotels, rowdy drunks, etc... and stay somewhere like the La Quinta near Causeway Blvd- it's basically strip malls and that's it, but you'd be safe there. just avoid "`18th st" and "Severn" motels and you should be fine. crime here is random, so anything can happen anywhere really, but i've never felt unsafe in metairie at any hour of the day or night. i wouldnt WALK anywhere, but i've waited outside of cabs, and drove around and such.
but yeah, it's as "safe" as you will get within 15 minutes of new orleans.

We've been to NO 8 times and you have to treat it like any other big city--keep your eyes & ears open. Metairie is on the edge of the French Quarter, so there are less people on the streets at night. I'd cab it if you're going to be out late, especially since there's so much more violence down there lately.

Well Metairie is safe and with out traffic is about 15 minutes away from Downtown the fest is pretty busy so it depends on what you want do to you have to go to teh french quater if you are older enough Bourbon street and if you can drink have hurricane while you at it, parking expect to pay between 10-20 per car flat rate. and yes you have to go to cafe du monde and if you can take the street car down st charles street and magazine where you can find small shops. Have fun I love that City

My boyfriend was in the Marines and stationed down there.
I went to visit him about 4 times. I don't think it's very safe.
There are lil gangsters running around everywhere.
But that's pretty much New Orleans in general.
