Take a look at 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21. It says 'Don't quench the Spirit' and 'test all things'.

How do they fit together?

How might these be seen as
working against each other?

They fit together very well. It tells us to let the Spirit work in us and we will understand the prophecies. Don't hinder the work of the Holy Spirit and we will see the truth of the Gospels come to light.
If you quench the Spirit you won't have the tools to test all things.
The Spirit is the light of truth and understanding in our lives let the Spirit guide you to salvation and knowledge in Christ.

Lets say you are giving some advice to a young person about driving the car - you might say;
keep your eye on the road; keep your hand on the wheel;
don't play with the tape player or talk on your cell phone while you are driving; look before you pull out; always use your turn signals; etc etc -
These are all suggestions about driving the car, but are all separate things that you suggest, right?
Well, same thing in 5:19 and on -
The subject and object of what is being discussed is a Christian and how they might conduct themselves with regard to the teachings of the Scriptures;
Don't quench the spirit, means just that. The Holy spirit guides us, and gives us the wisdom to understand the clear and common sense of Gods Word.
Test all things - always make sure that what you hear lines up with the Word of God. If it doesn't, don't believe it.
I say "if it doesn't fit, you must dump it".
If more people would pay attention to that one verse, you wouldn't have idiots getting away with writing nonsense books like "left behind", when if you test the idea in Gods Word, it comes up as pure nonsense. Don't believe it.
Nothing written in the Word works against each other. You are right to question, because that is exactly how you test all things.
If you don't understand something, or it looks like its a contradiction, or doesn't make sense, or seems unfair, then you need to study deeper - because you would be missing something.

Don't quench the spirit means that if the spirit is moving, don't shut it off. Test all things means you are to not swallow everything you hear. A good question to ask is, who is glorified by this? No man will glory in the sight of God. So, if man is glorified, it's not of God. I don't see them working against each other. I have been in churches where the Spirit was moving during the praise and worship time but the pastor stopped it to either deliver his sermon, or because service time was up. When the Spirit moves, let it move! Hope this Helps! We are to be alert as Christians, not asleep at the wheel.

This is not written to the unbeliever, the statement in v. 19 is speaking of not pushing aside the Spirit of God not our own. When Paul says "quench not" he is saying let the Holy Spirit guide you. You left out the last part of v. 21 it says to " hold fast that which is good", this is clear, if it doesn't fit with the scriptures or the nature of God then it is not good.

19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Keep away from every kind of evil.

The 'paragraph' in the NLT.

The Holy Spirit can be hindered through unbelief, what more can be said?

Christians are taught to discern for themselves what is good and avoid what is evil. If christians who are supposedly the light of this world is totally in darkness, how can they even live by the Spirit?

Quenching the spirit can happen when christians are indifferent to the truth and fail to live according to the will of God. Rather, these live by the flesh and for the moment. Awaiting eternal condemnation.

Sometimes we blindly accept things that are not from God. A little bit of skepticism is a healthy thing-but to just ? everything is what a lot of foolish people do In a venue like this. Endless ?'s that lead to more ?'s. If we want wisdom and answers; you are looking in the right place- learning to "rightly divide the word of truth" It's real truth we have in Him.

We should pray without ceasing. We should rejoice always in all things, whether they make us suffer or not (this does not mean that we should be glad to suffer, it means that we should be glad to have the opportunity to go through it, since it is ultimately for our good and God's glory).

We not despise preaching. We should study scripture.

To prove all things means to hold fast to all that is good. We should abstain from sin, and whatever looks like sin, leads to it, and borders upon it.

Nothing in the Bible words against another teaching in the Bible. They all come together harmoniously.

I don't think they work against eachother.....in fact they work together.
God tells us to test all spirits to see if they are genuine.....and not to quench the Holy Spirit at the same time. In other words....don't push the spirit aside....listen to Him in your spirit.

in case you flow lower back to Verses 3 via 10 it truly is speaking about the visual allure Anti-christ Verse 10.... tell's us that those that couldn't trust the note of God now..... 10) "He (The Anti-christ) will thoroughly fool those that are on their thanks to hell because they have pronounced"no" to the reality; they have refused to trust it and prefer it and enable it keep them." eleven) So God will enable them to trust lies with all their hearts 12) And all of them will be justly judged for believing a falsehood, refusing the reality and taking part of their sins. How does this contradict the Bible? (similar verses as yours, yet from the dwelling Bible.) this can be those that take the mark of the beast, and the most perverted of human beings meaning they sided with the Anti-christ. God has given guy over 2,000 years to settle for Him, and all via historic past some do and some do not, now even as the Anti-christ comes there'll nevertheless be some which will be saved, that do not take the mark, although the Anti-christ will cause them to wade through for this act hostile to him in the previous he kills them. interior the Bible after some scriptures, supplies referrence scriptures in case you'll flow to them, that is going to lower back up and clarify the scripture you're interpreting. yet, human beings have the prospect now to no longer ought to journey this...that is the peoples determination.
