The concept2 rower is the best machine out there, and I would recommend it, especially if your son wants to compete. Many colleges/clubs use concept2 times to qualify people.
Its more than GBP149, but if you look hard enough you can find a used one for less.

That's pretty tall for the average machine. I'm only 6'3" and I have a lot of trouble with exercise machines being too small.
Ends up being better just to work out with some free weights.
