On Earth, just about every living thing is male or female. In semitic languages and lots of Romance languages, everything has a gender, including objects like tables or things like bacteria. English is unique because it has a genderless pronoun (it) but it's considered impolite to refer to God as an "it." God is not male nor female, but male seems to be the default in language.

Interesting note, Allah is referred to as "He", though the -h ending often means female, but Allah is genderless.

Shiva or Kali in Hindu mythology often turn up as either sex. They have different 'aspects'.

You could run a search on matriarchal religions. For some reason they tend to get stamped out by men.

Pagan belief with a mother goddess used to be in the spirit of what you're talking about. The pagans I see these days don't seem to know what the hell they belief and use the term to mean 'miscellaneous superstitious crap'.

In Wicca and Paganism, there is the God (male) and the Goddess (female). Both of these energies are very different and contribute a specific part to creation itself. It is thought that life on earth is a divine reflection of these two creative forces. "One without the other is incomplete," as it states in the wine blessing. The same can be said here in our physical reality given that no child is born without the contribution of both sexes.

Hinduism also has a pantheon of Gods and Goddesses.

That's the problem. God is not male nor female. Stating any of these would provoke ideas that god has testicles or a vagina!
God can not be a male nor a female, but we tend to use male due to the fact that we see him as "strong" and not "emotionally weak" like a female...
"She" is used more on good looking things like "she is beautiful" to a boat.
"He is used more on strong things like "he is a beast" to a drag racer.

In my religion we know that there is a God the Father, and there is a Heavenly Mother. This is the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints (also know as Mormons).
