I recently had my hair dyed dark brown like thiers, but my hairdresser only used a demi permanent and it washed out in a couple of weeks to a reddish color. I want to just do it myself but i dont know if it was a violet-red base or a blue-red, or even something different?

I know exactly what your asking...My hair sounds just like yours. I have had to do many layers and bases in order to get my natural, light hair, dark brown. Heres how I did it myself..

At Walmart or any store that sells self dye kits, you should find your dye. Is your hair a light ash blonde? If so you will need two base coats in order to get the dark brown hair Cameron Diaz or Nicole Richies have.

Start out with a dark brown, a bit darker than your hair at the moment, Make sure it says on the box..." permanent color" or you will end up with light hair in a matter of weeks. Now after dying, with color, let your hair relax for one day...washing only once. The next day, you will then apply your final color. Now use the color you are going for. Apply to your hair, letting it sit just a bit longer than the dye time requires, about 5 min more, dont exceed that.

Now You will have the color you desire! Make sure you wash your hair with a shampoo & rinse cream, made for dyed or treated hair, this will help you mantain your dark hair color longer. Other shampoos would strip your color fast.
I hope this helps you...Have fun!

Well really if you're coloring your hair, most colors are made by Natural, Ash, or Golden.
If you have naturally warm skin, you can do an ash. But if you have cool skin tones, don't, it'll make you look very washed out. Do a warm or natural tone instead.

See the rows of colors offered in the shops. Match it and you will get it. I dont think you need to mix.
