A sister-in-law would like me to help her do her taxes using Turbo Tax. She has very simple taxes (compared to mine) and I think it'll be easy, but I feel funny doing someone else's taxes. No way do i want to be the prepayer on the paperwork.

She has offered to pay me, but I declined. I suspect she might give me a gift card or take me out to dinner instead. Do I have to put my name down on her taxes as the prepayer if I am not technically "paid"?

Thanks!

No, you do not. Just make sure she knows you are merely helping her complete the forms.

If you are not being paid to prepare the return, you do not sign the return as a paid preparer.

If the only reimbursement you received was for the cost of the software and / or e-filing fees that you charged to your personal credit card you are NOT a paid preparer.

No, I don't think so, if she helps you with the simple forms, she don't need to pay you, but if she does pay you, take the money anyway, it shows how much she cares for you.

ummm... Unless you plan on being there for her to help her when she gets audited. I don't suggest getting involved. People go to accountants and tax services for a reason.

No you do not. Turbotax will show "self-prepared".
