I don't think it's wrong to gamble, as long as you only gamble with money that you can afford to lose. If I go to a casino I have a budget and stick to it. Idealistically everyone would take the money and run, but realistically we all know that doesn't always happen (sometimes I do sometimes I don't).

It's unfortunate that some people get addicted to gambling, but there will always be people with addictive personalities. I don't necessarily think that it's fair to take something away from the masses to protect a minority, if you ban gambling then why not alcohol, tobacco, sex, and even food these are also all things that people can become addicted to.

Some people think it's wrong because it's money made without working for it. I personally believe that there is an element of entertainment involved in gambling, same as we would spend money on going out to dinner and a movie. I have no problems with it, scripturally or otherwise. Addiction is another issue, but still, I see it as a life-problem rather than an offense to God.

Gamble your life into a downward hill,That's what I did for years after payday i went to the casino.Years ago I did have control. Now I have not 20 dollars to spare on the good things I want to do because I got addicted to the games. If you know anything about get out while you're ahead do that.Don't be a fool like I was .And now don't have a dime they got me.Now it's back to square 1.Get your self together. When you gamble it 's just like having a drug and drinking problem.Watch out before you get hooked.

Wrong in what sense?

The only time it is wrong to gamble is when you cannot afford to do so, and the money you gamble with is money that should have been spent on something else.

Update: Some people have brought religion into their answers, stating that it is a sin to gamble. Well that's just nonsense. First off read the book of Job, where God basically takes a bet with Satan about destroying the life of one of His followers. Then check these other pro-gambling passages in the Bible (remember that drawing a lot is a form of gambling):

Numbers 26:52-56
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying ... the land shall be divided by lot.

Joshua 14:2
By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

Joshua 18:6
Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.

Joshua 19:51
These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD.

Joshua 21:8
And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

1 Chronicles 26:13-14
And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate. And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

Nehemiah 10:34
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God.

Acts 1:23-26
And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen.... And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

RUN!!! I don't think it's wrong to gamble. But if it starts to effect people around you (don't have money to feed your family) then it's wrong.

It's mathmatically wrong...

The house will always, (and I mean, ALWAYS) have at least 1% of a higher chance than you of winning... I for one, don't like those odds...

If you want to spend money to make money, invest it, start a business, hell, let it set in a bank, those have much greater chances of paying out with less risk.

Let's just put it this way, casino's didn't get that huge and extravagent by paying out so generously.

I think by catholic standards it's a sin. But if u can stop when you need to stop and not gamble your life savings away i think you'll be fine. I like to have a spending budget. Get a budget and stay true to the budget. It will not fail you, well unless your budget is all your assets...
