A friend of mine brought her kitten into the vet, because someone stepped on him. There didnt seem to be any serious harm done, but he was breathing a little hard. The vet said that he was in shock, and would keep him overnight for observation. He gave him two shots, of darvanx? or something that sounds like that. My friend didn't have the money to pay the vet, at the time (didn't plan for an emergency visit). So the vet kept the cat for a week. Saturday morning she picked up the kitten. His stomach was grossly distended, like he had worms, but the vet said that he wormed him. He didnt comment on what could have caused the cat's stomach to be distended like that. He gave the kitten a clean bill of health. Sunday morning, he had died in his sleep. The vet says that the kitten probably just had a heartattack, and takes absolutely no responsibility in the kittens death. Why would he have released him if there was probelm? What can we do? Can the vet be held responsible?

Well, the vet obviously missed something, you can sue him in small claims court for the cost of vet bills and the cost of the cat...I would get a full report and take it to another vet for them to give you their opinion. Have them write a statement for court. Also you can file a complaint with the state board for veterinarians...Good Luck, sorry about Kitty.

It is NOT the vet's fault. My neice also had a kitten die becuase it was stepped on. The cuase was internal bleeding. I am surprised that the vet was able to keep kitty alove for a week. Its too bad that the kitten died so soon after being brought home. I hate to say this to a grieving erson, but really, the death of the kitten is NOT the vet's fault.

let's see-your friends kitten gets stepped on,
your friend didn't have any money to pay the vet,
you don't know what kind of drug the vet gave the kitten,
when you get the kitten back, it dies.
owning a pet is a responsibility which your friend seems ill prepared to handle.

it seems odd that the vet would have wormed the kitten right after he had been "stepped on" esp. if he though he was in shock.

but anyway, the kitten probably died from internal bleeding which filled his stomach, but that is based on your description of his stomach, which could merely have been the result (rather than the cause) of the animals death.

Have the kitten to another vet (not the one you've used) for an autopsy. That should be able to give you a clearer understanding of what happened. Once you find that out, you can take it from there.

What are you thinking - Sue the vet for the death or a kitten? For god's sake, just get another kitten and don't take the issue any farther.

idont think you would want to have more stress whatever was wrong the little kitty cant be bought back and im sure the vet would only have done what was good for him. so feel rest assured that there was not bad intention they are only given to us for a short time.

If your friend can afford it, have a necropsy done. He shouldn't have sent the kitten home if he didn't know what was wrong with him.
