My kids and I suffer from occassional but severe migraines. So many people around me tell us we should lay off the acetaminophen because of health risks. Do you have an alternative that works for you? Especially non-prescription suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

First,
you may want to check into food allergies. If your migraines regularly follow certain meals it may be diet related. Several known migrain influencers include gluton and caffiene.
Second,
Whenever my sister was hit by a full on migraine, no medication ever seemed to help. We had a room in the house with no lights and sound proofed (heavy blankets on walls and windows). She would go in and sit for about ten minutes and it would fade. After an hour it would be gone completely.
Third,
I rarely suffer from migraines (perhaps once every three years) but when I do, they are doozies. I have found that trying various scented oils can help alter the reaction just enough to stave off the pain and even get rid of it all together. Depending on what I was doing when it hits, I like orange usually, but sometimes cinnamon oil really works for me. I think most people need a relaxer and not a stimulator, but I have low blood pressure so stimulants work better for me. A hankerchief in a ziploc bag with a little essential oil can help if the headache comes on when you are out and about.
In addition, you might try a relaxing tea in a quite spot. Yes, for kids too. If it is genetic, then it is a good idea to get them use to the idea of relaxing themselves with some green tea (or black depending on what you like best, but I find green works better for me)
Finally, check your environment. Get yourself a cheap aircleaner and check your ducts. You would be suprised how many allergens can cause these kinds of reactions.

Ibuprofen is what I recommend. Take 3 at once (this is safe- ask any doctor- though for the kids, stick to 2), drink something with caffeine, and place ice packs on the back of your neck and your temples. You should feel better. You can repeat the 3 ibuprofen every 4 hours.

If your migraines are that severe though, you may really want to try some prescriptions- you would be amazed at how quickly and how fully they relieve symptoms. I've been on Imitrex, which is good, and now am on Axert, which I love. You just take it whenever you feel one coming on, and it goes away.

Also, you should look into what your specific migraine triggers are. For me it is getting off of my sleep schedule, as well as at certain times in my menstrual cycle. But yours could be food-related, weather-related, stress-related, etc. Once you find out what your triggers are, you will be able to avoid the triggers and thus prevent the migraines. Good luck!

If the Ibuprofen doesn't work, you could always try 440mg of naproxen (Aleve) which is a very strong NSAID.
