yes, it is called healthy eating, and substituting good food for the crap that is in your diet now.

excercise is only part of the game- it helps and gives you an extra metabolism boost, but eating properly is the #1 important thing.

First off I would learn about nutrition from nutrition books- NOT diet books, diet books are trying to sell THIER plan not general nutrition information.

Most nutrition books are geared towards dieticians and nutritionists.

Here are two to get you started, the first is written simply and is an easy read geared towards that average person. the second is a good, but not too overwhelming book about nutrition that is more comprehensive.

1- eat drink and be healthy, the harvard medical school guide to healthy eating.

2- the New optimum nutrition bible- the green cover with the green apple on the front I believe is the newest version.

EDIT:
Aclohol consumption is a funny thing- to correct some "misinformation" that was posted before in one of the answers. Alcohol consumption in moderation- one or two glasses of wine a day, a beer or even a bit of hard liquor (depends on the type), while it may contain a lot of calories in some cases (wine is the lowest and the most optimal as far as calories vs. benefit), does prove to help your heart.

However- alcohol is one of those things that if you don't drink now, then don't start for "health" purposes- it is more of a pat on the back for those that have the "glass of wine with dinner" than those who want to go out and get s hit faced every night under the guise of doing something healthy. in small moderation, it can be healthy for you- in large amounts- it will have the opposite effect and cause you much trouble. However as far as weight loss goes, it is probably better to stay away from it until you find that you are in a "maintenance" stage, where you have achieved the level you want and are not about losing anything further, but want to simply maintain what you have at that level.

No, there is not. You must exercise more and eat less.

Do 30 minutes of cardio at least three times a week (run/walk/bike).

Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night (turn off the TV and the computer).

Don't consume alcohol--alcohol is nothing more than empty calories with no nutritional value.

Cut back on the foods you eat with high fat and high sugar content. Try to eat only single servings (read the label) with less than 3g saturated fat and 3g sugars.

Eat breakfast, and eat five small meals per day instead of three big meals.

If you don't wake up starving, then you ate too much the day before.

Good luck.

the key to fat loss is by controlling insulin levels. you want to make sure that the majority of the carbohydrates that you eat are low GI/high fiber. low GI carbs keep serum glucose (blood sugar) levels low and steady. this keeps serum insulin levels low and steady as well which is what is needed for fat loss.

for optimum results you really need to do some form of regular exercise even if it's just walking several times a week. this will help to increase insulin sensitivity in muscle cells. when insulin sensitivity is increased the body will secrete lower amounts of insulin when the body is metabolizing nutrients. this decreases fat storage and increases fat burning.
