At the end of the day, sadly themselves only.
First they need to admit to having the problem and many wont until its too late and after family breakups and even when the problem has caused them severe bodily damage which cant be repaired.
Alcoholics Anonymous is the group you need to get in touch with-or more importantly the drinker needs to attend their meetings,It depends if the alcoholic really wants to give up or not as to whether there will be a successful outcome.
Lastly if you are a child asking this question about a family member or friend (and I don't want to know either way) then please talk about the problem to someone you can confide and trust in.Don't carry it on your own shoulders.

If it's yourself your already taking the first step, if its a loved one the you may need to stage an intervention as they may not realize that they have a problem or may be in denial. Make an appointment with your family Dr. for meds to help with withdrawal symptoms is always a good ideas and getting into an AA support group of former drinkers will really help. Check the phone book for listings in your area. There are meetings available daily, sometimes even several times a day depending on the size of your community. AA hooks you up with a sponsor who is a person to act as a 'go to' when you feel the need for a drink. The program is done in a 12 step regime, check out their web site. Finally, ask GOD for help. There is nothing stronger than the power of pray. When we ask GOD to help shoulder our burdens and enter our hearts the load becomes lighter and paths open up.

As everyone has said the drinker themselves can only help themselves if they truly want to change. Once they are certain they want to change there are always groups not just AA in your local area just inquire about them from your local council also inform a family member as support during such hard times is always needed. If all else fails seek professional help, it may be expensive but if the drinker wants to have a happier and healthier life then they will do it. Also the money you would be spending on drink will be spent on counseling, which is much more effective!!!

As someone else said, only you can help yourself.

However, there is no shame in seeking help from others. That's the first step.

You can talk to friends (especially those that don't drink at all).

You can contact a private therapist.

AA and other support groups.

Churches, synagogues, and other religious groups have resources.

It's not hard to find help. It really isn't. What's hard is making the call and showing up.

the only people i have heard of but not myself as i do not drink is AA alcoholic's anonymous.
or you can ask your friend's and family to help.
or you try and help yourself by not buying the drink or going into pub's it will be hard though sorry.
or the church.
go doctor's and see if they can get you into rehab.
you will have a lot off help if you help yourself and make the first move.
in the end it is up to you only you can make this life changing thing happen by picking up the phone an talk it is good to talk.

AA and rehab. Plus the alcoholic has to want to change as well. In drastic cases, an intervention may be needed.

first they have to really be ready.....then the best course of action, is to seek outside professional help, such as rehab, aa, a sponser (someone that has already gone through the process, and is willing to "hold their hand" and be there for them).....It is a hard habit to kick...having trouble myself...so if this is for you...I wish ya the best of luck!
