I was 6 years in the Navy, 4 of those on an amphibious assault ship (USS Belleau Wood LHA-3). We worked a lot with the Marines, but they were not part of us. In a nutshell, they are under the Department of the Navy, but only to the extend that they report to the Secretary of the Navy. Below, they have their own chain of command, just like all the other branches.

From what I have seen, the Navy and Marines work closer together than any other branches of the military working with another branch. But this could just be because of the environment I was in.

I would expect you want a real answer and not just people's opinions of what they think. So:

In 1980, the Commandant of the Marine Corps was made a
full member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in 1986 under the
Goldwater-Nichols Act, the Marine Corps was given equal status
with the other services. (Army, Navy and Air Force).

Therefore, until 1986 the USMC was an integral part of the US Navy but is now recognized by law as a separate branch of the military.

The US Marine Corps is a separate branch of service UNDER the Department of the Navy. Each service has it's own mission, duties and responsibilities. Let the Air Force or Army try to run a ship?

I guess some would say yes, but from my perspective i would say no. the Marines have a proud history with the navy as does the Navy with the Corps. same could be said with the Army and Air force which Interact more together. although in this day and time all the services interact more together than they have in past generations because of the world threat that we face today.

As the child of a National Guard Sargent and an Army 4 Star General grandfather- and the wife and sister Of a Marine- it is an elite fighting task force-ground men for the Navy. They are the first in-ie: my Brother into Kuwait city-and due to their training and skills, front the entering army ground troops. They are a branch of the Navy, but are a distinct and highly honored separate group. Kind of a put down question by its sound though....

Yeah the navy has to cut some of it's funding for the marines... I have a good friend who joined the marines and he even agrees that they are a branch on the navy.

I mean the marines don't have their own medics.. The navy has to supply them....

Marines are part of the Navy and they know it, they just do not like to admit it. If they have nothing to do with the Navy then why is the marines Logo have a ships anchor on it. Also they are paid by the Department of the Navy. That pretty much confirms that the marines are part of the navy!
