CHAKRAVAKOM (aka Chakravakaam, and Chakravakam, a musical composition in Indian Classical Music)


This is the 16th mela^ 4th raga in the third chakra Agni. ‘Agni - Bhu’ is the mnemonic name for the raga sa ri gu ma pa dhi ni is the mnemonic phrase. This is a murchanakarake mela. Ma and Ni of Chakravakom when taken as Shadja result in the raga are Sa^ Sudha Ri^ Antara Ga^ Sudha Ma^ Pa^ Chatusruti Dha and Kaishiki Ni. A sarva svara gamaka varika rakthi raga^ Ri and Ni are jiva svaras whereas Ga and Pa are amsa svaras. Ri and Pa occur as nyasa svaras. Fairly distributed raga with tristhayi sancharas. It is also a sarvakalika mela. Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer was an expert in singing this raga. He obtained the title ‘maha’ by singing this raga at the age of 12. The evolution of this raga is believed to date from the time of the 72 melakartha scheme. According to Dikshitar school^ this rag is named as Vegavahini.
