i have winamp and a vocal remover plug-in, but what do i do next? how do i rip the vocals and then save the backing track?

In Winamp Ctrl P will take you to the preference menu and the plugins are at the bottom left, you configure from there (The one you have installed may be under DSP/Effect or Output)

but in general vocal removers don't work well! to remove all of the vocals usually means removing 75% of the music
