You say K9 which is an american term or are you British and get your ideas from TV?.In the UK you join police and do two years probation then apply for vacancy when it comes up.Idont want to put you off but it could take years and so you should be prepared for long stint in other duties.

I obtained my K-9 after having requested manning within my own department. The K-9 was cheaper than opting for additional personnel.

However, since then I've gotten another human partner.

To become a K-9 officer, you have to show the desire to commit yourself to the care and up-keep in addition to the overall responsibility.

You don't join a police agency and immediately go in to the K-9 field. That comes after probation and some period of time within that departments policies and procedures.

It is a very rewarding part of law enforcement, and you couldn't ask for a more loyal partner!

Best wishes!

As I understand it, you just need to become a Police Officer like all the other cops, then once ur n the dept. you can begin training with the K9s. I'm sure they have a separate program that must be passed! Good Luck and please keep ur doggy away from me! Haha! :o)

First you have to be an officer. Then you check for openings for the position. Once you are in you go through training to see if you will work out for the position. Once you have passed you will be partnered out with a K-9 and work with the dog for a few weeks. The dog will be living with you. Then you hit the streets.

UK, you have to join and do your 2 years probation. If you show enough interest and are suitable for the role you can volunteer for the Dog Section.

You have to become a police officer first. Requirements to become a police officer vary and how you become a police officer varies depending on the state and the department. Visit the websites of the police departments that you might want to work for. Police department websites often provide information about their applicant requirements, about how to apply, and about their hiring process. Some relatively common minimum requirements include having at least a high school diploma or ged, being at least 21 years old, being a U.S. citizen, having a valid driver's license, and having no felony convictions. Some relatively common steps in hiring processes include application, written test, physical fitness test, interview, drug test, medical examination, psychological evaluation, and background investigation. It would be a good idea to try to get hired with a large police department that has K-9 units. Most police departments require officers to work patrol for at least a couple of years before being eligible for additional duties. You would have to attend training with the dog you would be working with. If you want to be selected for additional duties or assignments, become the best police officer that you can. Maintain an excellent record and reputation as an officer.
