Start with your primary but first, take a look at your diet and physical movement. Make sure you are eating foods that are good for you and getting some kind of exercise. Those commercials make it seem like an anti-depressant pill will answer all. They don't. If you feel you have depression, start by making a list of all your aches and pains. Do not go into your doctor and say, I think I am depressed. You will not help yourself or your doctor. Remember, you are the only one that can help your inner you. Good luck!

It may depend on the type of health insurance you have. If HMO, see your primary (the gatekeeper) for a referral to Mental Health. You may also be able to access Mental Health Services through Customer Service and make your own consult appointment. If you have PPO, contact Customer Service and get the names and numbers of participating psychiatrists in your area or refer to the Provider Directory you were mailed.

That's a good start. Your doctor can recommend a psychiatrist for you if he or she feels it's necessary. My primary Dr. prescribed an antidepressant for me initially. Later, I decided to see a psychiatrist that is more knowledgable about what the options are.
