I realize there are a lot of responsible owners that love the breed.
My question is to the owners of those I see on chains.
It seems to me that many young people today want them as a statement or simply because everyone else has one.

they are great dogs if they are treated right. they dont need a ton of exercise like labs and other dogs arent too big or too small short hair so they dont shed. they are beautiful dogs and the will protect you if trained properly. oh yeah.. they are also one of the smartest dogs out there.

I have a pit. For me it was neither a statement or because other people. I wanted to adopt a dog so I went and fell in love with her immediately. Lola is everything you could want in a dog. She is sweet, loyal, obedient, she's great with kids and other dogs, she's a big mush. Since having her for the past two years, it has become a statement. When people hear or see you with a Pit Bull they always give a look, so now I feel responsible as a Pit owner to help to change th public opinion of the breed. I have met many pits and all of them have been just as great as Lola. While yes some pit bulls can be dangerous, so can any ther breed, its all a matter of environment. Additionally it infuriates me that PETA advocates the euthansization of pit bulls. Lola has never had a chain collar or anything of the sort, beside a leash when walking the only physical restrain she has is our electric fence, so she and my other 2 dogs can go out and play, but still be safe. This is just many opinion but I think that a lot of other pit owner have the same feelings.

Many people do get pit bulls for the statement they make. I have a boxer mix and we think she is mixed with a pit bull because she looks like one. She is the most beautiful dog, and I love the look of pit bulls. I didn't get her to make a statement, I just fell in love with her right away. I think the people who get a pit bull to make a statement, will crop their ears and maybe even their tails to get the mean look. I think they are adorable with the floppy ears, which is how my dog looks.

Just because you see a dog on a chain doesn't mean that they are always on a chain. If I had a large yard that wasn't fenced in, I would tie my dog outside for a little while to run around. Although, I would be outside also to watch her and play with her. And I would keep her in a kennel while I was gone, for her own safety. You never know what a dog will get into while you are away at work or sleeping. And it's not just pit bulls, there are many breeds that are not treated fairly. Pitt bulls were mainly fighting dogs, so they were raised to be aggressive, and to fight. This gave them a bad rep. It doesn't mean that all pit bulls are this way. It's all in how you raise them. I have heard of many other dogs that are just as aggressive, but they don't get as much media attention as a pit bull. I think pit bulls are beautiful dogs, and if trained from a puppy, they are great pets.

Pits are great dogs. Dog & kids reflect their owners/parents.
Us as society likes to jump to conclusions & make judgments at each other or people who are different. Animals that are dangers wild or tame. No one likes to research things and get all the facts before coming to a conclusion. We all like to point the finger at everyone else in stead of at ourselves. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions always some else's fault . With kids & animals & our own actions.

All dogs can be vicious & violent. I have seen a poodle tear up a kids face. Dogs fault no . the owner never socialized the dog around kids. The mother never taught her child how to act around an animal. Its our responsibility to teach our pets & children how to act what is okay what is not.

Never let your child or anyone run up or yelling to animals . Never show fear. Animals sense this and they think you have something to hide so they go into defense mode and will protect them selves or their family at any cost. You see an animal you want to pet walk up calmly to the owner (do not make eye contact with the animal don't even acknowledge the animal) & ask if its okay to pet their dog.

Socialize your animal around all different kinds of things people other animals loud noises , different surfaces. Dogs need to walk for an hour at least , some breeds need more walks then others , size & energy you have to take into account. Play time , training & they should be crated . Dogs are den animals & when you are not at home or you are sleeping they should be crated or sectioned of to only one part of the house. Dogs have to have rules. You should always look into what kind of dog will fit with your family & lifestyle & that you are going to keep the dog & healthy & loved for its entire life span.(I do understand that some times things can't be helped you should count on that before you get animal & have a plan so the dog doesn't get put into a shelter.)

Best wishes to all

many people see pit bulls as a mean raging creature, but there not, it's the owners that make them vishious. I have a pit bull mix and she is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. I don't know why people treat animals like this. Even a golden retrever can turn mean because of the owners.

Here we go again. Yes, I had a Pit Bull. He was the most wonderful dog I ever had. He slept in my bed every night. He understood every word I said. He was socialized from the moment I got him. We went to the pet stores every week so he could browse and meet other dogs. He was my precious "Bubby".

I attended a summer family gathering and of course, Bubby came with me. (This is where it gets difficult to tell and every time I tell it, I say I won't tell it again) Bubby was sitting with me in a chair and one of the kids was sitting at the dining table about ten feet away. The child was sitting there not looking our way. Bubby jumped and lunged toward the child. Thank God I had his leash on him. I jerked him back. Pits are very strong dogs. He was going for the kid and I could hardly control him. As I jerked him back and I was talking to him, another kid walked in from another room and he did the same thing. This kid was one year old and just learning to walk. She wouldn't have had a prayer against that dog and his muscle. These kids were not even looking his way, he just went off and attacked them.

I couldn't believe this was happening to me and the dog I loved. I can't remember doing this, but I dragged him out the door and brought him home. I was so upset I don't remember any of the trip home. I sat and cried. I didn't know what to do. The next day I called my Vet. We talked for over an hour on the phone. The Vet asked me different questions about Bubby's behavior. He was showing signs of aggression and I didn't know that's what it was. If your dog body slams you while playing with you, that is not a good behavior. I learned a lot that day. I went on line and read more. I read about Pit Bulls BEFORE I had Bubby and just felt it was the owner's fault or the dog had been abused. Not true......I still don't know what he was thinking or what could have set him off for no reason that day.

I had Bubby put to sleep the next day. I had to do it quickly because if I didn't, I wouldn't have done it. I had to keep those little children's faces in front of me. I had to think of what COULD have happened IF his leash was not attached to him. I would have killed myself if something tragic happened to one of those children or anyone else.

I think the breed has been so abused that you cannot breed the killer instinct out of them. Their strength surpasses any other dog breed. When they clamp on to something you are NOT going to unlock their jaws. I have a Pit Bull book that shows you what to do with a board to unlock their jaws. I could not, in my heart of hearts, allow my beloved dog that chance again.

The sad part is, you have no idea when they are going to attack. Like in my situation, everything was wonderful and WHAM! just that quick, he attacked.

I become livid when I hear people say, "it is the owner that makes the dog that way." That might be true in some cases as with other breeds, but I don't think a dog could have had more love than mine did..............................................

I have 3. I love them. They have their own bedroom and toy box. They are my kids and I am the leader of their pack. You DO have to socialize them VERY well and show them nothing but LOVE in order for them to turn out right. If I spent hours at a time on a chain with no attention or friends to play with, I would end up pretty mean and hateful too. Can you blame them? Look at the ignorance they deal with every day?

It is not just the pitbulls that are on chains!! I cannot even count the number of all breeds I see tied up outside & freezing!!

People just don't make responsible decisions when getting a pet, they may not have realized the work it takes to properly raise an animal & instead of finding a good home for them, they tie them up & wait for them to die....

It is sad!!

Lora D...where are you from ? Im just curious because im in California and here the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier/ Staffordshire Bull Terrier are recognized as two different breeds. But I know that in Europe they can be dual registered....even some kennel clubs dont recognize a difference. My cousin had a staffordshire....he was only allowed to keep it because he could prove that it wasnt a pitbull ( they are banned in our area ).

I agree with you but it isn't just pitt bulls. It is disgusting and sad to adopt any dog and put it on a chain. Dogs need exercise and companionship and people shouldn't get one if they just plan to stick it in a kennel in the backyard. Saying the dog is for protection is crap- burglars break into your house, not the backyard. What good is that dog going to do when someone comes in through the front and is inside your house if it is chained up out back?

for those of you who thinks pitbulls are so called "mean" get your head out of the ground and look around. its the OWNERS who should be put down. Its not there fault the owners neglect them and use them as a fighting tool. Its not fair that these dogs get treated so badly and there nothing more then another breed. I have had alot of pitbulls run in my family and they are EXTREME sweethearts! if you doupt me then go to this website and see for yourself.
