John Paul II worked side by side with Margaret Thatcher of Great Brittain and Ronald Reagan of the United States, along with our other allies around the world, to bring down the evil empire of the Soviet Union.

The Pope's timely visit to Poland and his brave and unqualified support for the Solidarity Movement there revealed the true weakness of the communist system of government.

Within a short time, Poland was free of Soviet domination, and the rest of eastern Europe soon followed. The Soviet Union itself collapsed, a few months later.

Anyone who grew up in the 50's and 60's when the "Iron Curtain" and the "Cold War" became the harsh, world reality, would have never dreamed that such things could disappear so quickly and so completely.

This was an extraordinary turn of events that would not have happened without the timely and heroic intervention of the Pope, and of course, the grace of God.

I think the most important thing he did, and this is historical, is he was the first Pope to reach out to the youth of the world. Jesus said, Peter, do you love me? Feed my children. John Paul also broke up about 450 years of Italian rule by the Papacy. I think this is biblically significant.

The world, meaning the system around us? The bible speaks that the 'world' is lying in the power of the wicked one (1 John 5:19).

In that sense, he must have been a great loss for that 'ruler of the world.'
