For some reason she hates me. All I ever did to her was whap her on the nose sometimes when she was a kitten, and she's about three years old now. I'll be petting her and she'll be melting in to the couch and purring, and then all of a sudden she'll stop and try to bite my hands off.

Sometimes she'll stay on my lap for a second but rarely. She loves everyone else in the family. She's my cat, too.

What can I do besides feed her?

Let the cat approach you instead of the other way around.
Also I would not discipline the cat by swatting it because that is why the cat is wary of you. If you must discipline the cat use a spray bottle with water in it.
Good luck

I know this is going to sound odd, but trust me when I say the best way to form a solid bond with your cat in order for them to stay relaxed and comfortable around you, and sit with you or on you is to do and act like other cats do.

When you approach your cat or hold him, gently rub your forehead up against theirs. This is a sign of affection and comfort to cats. It may take a little while if it's an older cat, but if it's a kitten it will start to work immediately.

I have done that with all my cats since they were kitts and now they know they can trust me and come to me for comfort at all times.

Whapping her on the nose for no reason when she was a kitten could be enough to make her hate you. I suggest being sweet to her when she wants you to and leaving her alone when she doesn't want you to. That's just the way cats are. Maybe a dog would be a better pet for you.....

I have a fuax-fur blanket that I put on my lap when I cat-sit my friends' cats. So even though these cats may not like me, they jump into my lap because of the blanket.

You can also try giving her a treat when she's in your lap, so eventually she'll associate being in your lap with good feelings.

I hope you find something that works!

Not all cats are lap cats. I have two and the oldest is very particular about where he's pet, how long, rarely jumps up on our laps and will nip your fingers if you pet him anywhere other than his head, the other one loves being on our laps, loves to be pet, she loves that kind of attention. You can't force her to stay on your lap or be pet, sometimes you have to let her just come to you, they don't like being pressured, just ease off of her and she should come around.

You should be patient. If she runs away when you try to pick her up, don't try again, maybe later. Don't keep on telling her to come to you, if you do, but once in a while would be great. And observe how your family handles him/her, maybe you are being too rough. Try this, and if it doesn't work, think it through; to find anything else you could do. What I told you is the basics. I am an animal fanatic, it should work slowly. And it should, again, you have to be patient.

There's not much you can do... A cat has a mind of it's own... and will do whatever it feels it wants to do... If you want a lap pet then buy a dog... They will do just about anything a human wants them to do... leaving you to wonder about their real intelligence level...

most cats seem to feel naturally superior to everyone. Maybe your cat feels superior to you somehow. Cats have personalities and maybe it just has a personality conflict with you lol, sorry that sounds kind of crazy. Cats aren't as smart as they think they are, you just have to figure out some way to trick it into liking you.

Some kitties simply don't like laps. Don't force the issue: She will come lay in your lap when she's ready.

Also, she might be telling you that she has had enough petting. Again, don't force the issue.
