This is like asking the question "What's the difference between coffee and lobster?" They are 2 totally different things. Windows Vista is the newest operating system from Microsoft, whereas Windows XP has been out for quite a few years now. Vista just came out on the open market, so if you're planning on installing it, I'd strongly suggest to wait for a couple of months until they release the first Service Pack to fix any reported bugs.

I'll put it this way, Vista needs a lot more RAM, a fast CPU, it is probably the only operating system to require 256 graphics card ram with a 3d accelerator minimum. It's security is supposedly better although they have a lot of updates because people are finding it easy to break into. XP is currently and always will be a lot faster, there may not be a DirectX 10 for XP but Vista has DirectX 10, Vista's DirectX isn't compatible with older versions of DirectX such as DirectX 9. The layout of vista is thrown around so that people aren't used to it, and in My Computer(which is now just called Computer) the paths show as C:>Documents and Settings>User rather than just
C:\Documents and Settings\User. A lot of software isn't compatible with Windows Vista. If you want to waste a computer, get Vista. It lets you do hardly anything because of all the security..it thinks you are a virus... and just like the TV ad, there is a WOW, WOW how slow is this *throws on floor, turns away, walks forward, doesn't turn back*.

GET LINUX!
