How could it be otherwise. Just because one cannot imagine It does not mean It does not exist. Just because one cannot see it doesn't mean it cannot be perceived. Hubris is a tricky thing. People trick themselves into ignoring the Creator of everything perhaps so that they don't have to embrace the virtues. This is not to say that the questioner does this but that it is fairly prevalent in the world of humanity.

How can the creation imagine the Creator? The Creator is an Invisible Essence. Humanity cannot imagine an invisible essence. It is an abstraction that we are not equipped to perceive directly. Can your artwork imagine its creator? Can it get down off the easel or the potters wheel, take your keys and wallet and go for a spin in your auto? You are not the end all and be all. None of us are. A little humility in this vast universe is in order and of great benefit to whomever embodies it. How else could one allow his or her self to begin to see the truth.

Let us suppose that God is not obvious to the five senses except indirectly. And again let us suppose that God has given everyone a choice whether or not to look with a pure heart in His direction. If God were omniobvious then it would defeat that choice. Everyone would immediately perceive him with the five senses. This way we can choose to love God or to look away. That is a sign that God loves humanity and wants humanity to love Him. He could have programmed us to love him automatically. Then we would not have free choice.

Cruelty and inhumanity in the world is the result of looking away and failing to embrace the virtues. The mind of man turned away from God is satan. For those who suffer at the hand of the wilfully blind there is a special dispensation.

If all you can see is the material world you may have made your choice already.

What do you mean by "explanation"?

Any answer to this question one receives would, definitionally, be a statement of belief. It could not be more because the horizon of the universe, to say nothing of its entirety, is not accessible to human perception even with our most sophisticated tools. So we are out of the realm of empirical knowledge--and deep into the realm of belief and faith.

Obviously, then, there will be not one but numerous right answers to your question--although many of those right answers will be deemed totally wrong by other persons advocating for other answers. Alternatively, you might choose to view all these answers as wrong. You will not have any basis, nor does anyone else, for telling the truth or falsehood status of any of their answers using empirical observation, or logic, or any objective source whatsoever, although some of those who answer your question are going to be so completely immersed in the cosmology and mythology of their own belief systems, that they will offer you elements of those belief systems as if they were objective proof of the truth of their statements.

Here are some right or wrong answers you might receive:

(1) "No. There is no supreme power, either controlling or not controlling the universe." (Atheist belief systems.)

(2) "Yes. There is one supreme power really controlling the universe." (Monotheist belief systems.)

(3) "Not exactly. There are many supreme powers, who together control the universe." (Polytheist belief systems.)

(4) "Yes and no. There is a supreme power, but the universe operates according to its own laws and is not controlled." (Deist belief systems.)

(5) "Your question misses the point. The universe itself is the supreme power, and is unfolded according to itself, not to some external control.)" (Pantheist belief systems.)

(6) "Sort of. There is a supreme power, which includes the universe but also goes beyond it, and how it lives itself out in the universe cannot be understood as control." (Panentheist belief systems.)

All these are true. Or false. You decide.

Here's the real question:

What do you believe?

Here's my explanation.

When a man lights a stick of dynamite it explodes in chaotic random directions. But put the same powder in a firework and the chaos becomes a pattern. It is designed that way by a higher power, man.

The Big Bang happened and the universe as we know was not destroyed but created to follow specifically designed physical laws that we use to explain how are universe exists. Those laws are discovered laws. They existed long before man ever came into being. Only very recently in human history did man began to uncover them.

Personally I would call those laws brilliant because they explain how life exists on earth today. I believe they come from a supreme being that controls the universe.

There are many elements in the universe that interact with each other. The interactions create chaos and order. The complexities are enough for human to try to comprehend. There is no evidence that any supreme being is controlling anything. Gods are created by human to explain the things that are not yet explainable.

There is a third factor involved in the Supreme Being, which is very important. As in all cases where spirit and matter exist together and work in combination, THERE HAS TO BE MIND to make it possible for the two to exist and get along together. So, here there is SUPREME MIND, bestowed by the Infinite Spirit, which COORDINATES God the Supreme, the spirit personality part, and the Almighty Supreme, the power-evolutionary part, and which makes it possible for both parts to exist and grow in this evolutionary age.

I wouldn't say control the universe but wills it. More like a guide something could be guiding the universe. I had a hard time believing that something is in direct control of the universe it's just too big!
